Kaiju No. 8 chapter 116 began with a flashback detailing Soshiro Hoshina and Gen Narumi first meeting. The latter hated the former immediately, but via Weapons No. 1 and general observation came to respect Hoshina’s power. This prompted Narumi to ask Hoshina to become his Vice-Captian in the First Division, but Hoshina declined. He added that he already knew who he wanted to serve under before walking away.

Narumi was shown to be upset at this, Hoshina’s promotion to Vice-Captain of the Third, and breaking all of Narumi’s close-quarters combat records. Returning to the present, the two entered the fight against the Meireki Era Mega Monster (Meireki for short) together. The two’s power was on full display, with the series explaining that Hoshina’s ability to fight alongside Narumi is impressive due to how dangerous doing so is for him.

Hoshina likewise recognized Narumi’s power, telling No. 10 that Narumi is one monster he wants to avoid fighting at all costs. More likely than not, Kaiju No. 8 chapter 117 will begin by explaining that both the tiny Kaiju which infected Kafka and the oni-mask warrior are contributing to his powers. The former will likely be said to provide the physical transformation and related abilities, while the latter offers a hybrid approach and control in a transformed state. This may not be explicitly said, but should be made clear in whatever explanatory flashback is coming.

Chapter 117 will also likely elaborate on Hoshina and Narumi’s status at some point, likely doing so without breaking the flashback sequence up.
