Jujutsu Kaisen's Hajime Kashimo was a surprise package all around. Since his introduction in chapter 158, his fight with Kinji Hakari, and later his breathtaking bout with Ryomen Sukuna, the reincarnated sorcerer used the spotlight well to establish himself as a powerful force.
Fighting Sukuna, however, was his final involvement in this final arc as the Demon King's might prove to be all too overwhelming. Even so, Kashimo nearly had Sukuna on the ropes and forced him to reincarnate into his true form. With everything said and done, the battle has progressed far beyond that point.
Yet, there looks to be a lingering interest in a little detail that wasn't addressed as such— What had Kashimo been doing for the past month before the Battle of Shinjuku? A popular theory suggests that his initial intended role may have been as a foil to Gojo, but circumstances compelled a different outcome.

Jujutsu Kaisen: This theory explains how Kashimo's original role might have been as a foil to Gojo
There has been a plethora of Jujutsu Kaisen theories formulated so far. As such, another one joins in, this time surrounding a fan-favorite character in reincarnated sorcerer, Hajime Kashimo. Dubbed the "God of Lightning", Hajime Kashimo was one of the reincarnated sorcerers who appeared in the Culling Games and later the Shinjuku Showdown.
His battle against Sukuna was well received. and many had hoped it had ended differently. But prior to this, a popular theory began. It revolved around why Kashimo waited till December to face Sukuna rather than jump right in, and why he went in after Gojo.
To begin with, it is untrue that Kashimo wanted Gojo to weaken Sukuna before swooping in and stealing the limelight. The reason he went after Gojo was because like Gojo and Sukuna, he too valued strength highly. He likely seconded Gojo and Sukuna's decision to fight at full power, realizing that he would get what he wanted as well in that case, i.e., to fight Sukuna uninhibited.
Moving forward, with this in place, the theory grows more intriguing. Prior to the Shinjuku Showndown, Kashimo likely faced Gojo and lost. Like the two sorcerers, Kashimo was also considered "The Strongest" during his time. To individuals like this, defeat is major. Thus, it explains that he decided to go in after Gojo following his loss to the Six Eyes user.
Later, during Gojo vs Sukuna, Kashimo was the first to forbid anyone from interfering. This shows that he understood Gojo quite well and the importance of the fight. A few moments later, he goes on to praise Sukuna's Domain Amplification— yet another indication of him facing Gojo and likely using the same technique to counter Gojo's Limitless.
Finally, during their fight, Kashimo was probably going to release his Cursed Technique (CT), Mythical Beast Amber, but Gojo stopped him. This could be due to Gojo wanting to face him again once the big battle was over and answer all the questions he had, as he saw himself in Kashimo. So, to find the answers he was seeking, fighting Sukuna was necessary.
Final Thoughts
Jujutsu Kaisen portraying a Gojo vs Kashimo bout, even if briefly, would be invaluable. It would have proven to be a great match-up, like a couple of others, and definitely one to take note of and remember. But it is understandable why it had to be excluded, as it would diminish the impact of chapter 236.
Nonetheless, Hajime Kashimo was quite an impressive character, despite his limited screen time. His CT was also unique, and one to catch even Sukuna by surprise. It cannot be denied that his character had fine potential and could have played a bigger role in the ongoing battle.
