With the Dragon Ball Daima anime currently airing, fans have been sucked back into the original theme of the series, the adventure that saw Goku and his friends search for the wish-granting orbs. While fans have been enjoying the callback to the original series, they want more DBS content as well.
The last television anime from the franchise finished airing in 2018, and its movie was released in 2022. Considering that two years have passed since then, fans expected Toei Animation to announce a sequel television series or a new movie by now. Unfortunately, that hasn't been the case.
That said, some latest information from Toei Animation suggests that fans could soon witness another Dragon Ball movie on the big screens.
Toei update suggests a new Dragon Ball movie set for 2026
With 2024 inching closer to its end, Toei Animation unveiled its Financial Results Briefing Material on its official website. According to the report, the animation studio is planning to release two movies based on existing IPs for the world in the fiscal year of 2026.
Considering that Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning was released in 2023, a new movie from the franchise hardly seems to be the case. Meanwhile, both Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and One Piece: Red were released in 2022. Hence, it is much more likely that Toei Animation has been planning to cash in on their big IPs together in 2026.
The reason it could only be those two franchises is that out of the vast number of anime Toei Animation has under its belt, only those two are widely popular globally. Therefore, there is a huge chance that fans could soon get to witness another movie based on the Akira Toriyama series.
For now, fans can only hope that the animation studio announces this as soon as possible. With Jump Festa 2025 set to take place in about a week, an announcement could also be made on the Red Stage.
Fans' reaction to a possible new Dragon Ball movie
Most fans wished that one of the two IP movies be a Dragon Ball movie. While the new Daima anime is ongoing, fans wanted to witness some big-screen action as well.
"PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BE DRAGON BALL I BEG YOU," one fan said.
"Please no movie except its written by Toriyama himself," another fan said.
"I'm fine with it as long as they don't adapt the DBS manga as a movie first," another added.
"I just want Super to continue. I'm tired of watching the ending, it's that good lol. I need to know what happens to Jiren & the others and if they matter in the future," other fan said.
Other fans argued over what they wanted. Some fans did not want to watch any movies from the franchise unless it was written by the late Akira Toriyama himself. Meanwhile, others did not mind who created the story for the film as long as it did not adapt the manga. This is because they wanted to watch it adapted as part of the television anime.
Lastly, some fans did not care for the movie at all. Instead, they wanted Toei Animation to announce a sequel season for Dragon Ball Super anime.
