Following the release of compilation volume 110 of mangaka Eiichiro Oda’s best-selling One Piece series, fans saw the volume’s SBS question corner be quickly translated. While there was a significant amount of information revealed, one of the most notable answers concerned Admiral Kizaru and a role he played in the Egghead Arc.
Specifically, the answer all but confirmed that Admiral Kizaru was the one who gave Luffy food when Saint Jaygarcia Saturn was restraining him and the other Straw Hats. While seemingly insignificant, this was a turning point for the rest of the arc as it gave Luffy the ability to begin fighting back against the Marine forces. However, it may also be meaningful as a signal for what Kizaru’s true and eventual role in One Piece is.
Kizaru may end up betraying the Marines for the Revolutionary Army in One Piece
While Dr. Vegapunk was certainly a focus of the Egghead Arc, several other previously introduced characters also received a major spotlight. This includes the aforementioned Admiral Kizaru, Bartholomew Kuma, and his daughter Jewelry Bonney. Coincidentally, all of these characters also first appeared together during the Sabaody Archipelago Arc.
The Sabaody Archipelago Arc also sees Kizaru reunite with Kuma as the latter’s Pacifista conversion surgeries are all but completed. Much like how Kizaru was unable to follow the orders of the Marines and World Government when it came to Dr. Vegapunk, he may hold similar contempt over Kuma’s ultimate fate.
In fact, it’s likely that Kizaru was so distraught over killing Dr. Vegapunk is because he was already aware of Kuma’s ultimate fate. Whereas he was able to live with Kuma’s Pacifista status, killing Dr. Vegapunk was an order he couldn’t separate his personal feelings from. It may even be the case that the knowledge that he’d have to partake in killing both Bonney and Dr. Vegapunk, caused him to reach such a significant emotional juncture.
Likewise, his motivation in helping Luffy and giving him food was likely two-fold: firstly to ensure his friends had the best chance of survival, but also as an act of defiance against the World Government. The latter motivation makes sense since Kizaru could leverage the powers of his Glint-Glint Fruit to do so without getting caught by his allies.
A third potential motivation for helping Luffy could be to curry favor with Monkey D. Dragon, who is the leader of the Revolutionary Army. This would make particular sense given that Kizaru is likely already aware of the group’s siege on Mariejois. In other words, he has tangible proof that he can actually fight back against the cruel system he is currently a cog of by enlisting under Dragon.
Further supporting the idea that Kuzan may leave the Marines to go join the Revolutionary Army is the fact that Kuzan, a former Admiral, also left and joined an opposing group. However, given Oda’s penchant for inversions and Kizaru’s personal motivations and relationships, it’s more likely that he’d join the Revolutionary Army than be a pirate.
Final thoughts
Obviously, the above is purely speculative beyond the official, essentially confirmed reveal that Kizaru was the one who got Luffy food in the Egghead Arc. However, when considering Kizaru’s role in the arc and personal relationships, it seems likely that this may be the start of his journey to joining the Revolutionary Army.
