On December 22, 2024, Chainsaw Man: Reze Movie released its release window and teaser trailer, which took over the internet in a few minutes. The trailer was sensational, which was expected given how MAPPA took so long to deliver the movie's first update. However, one thing was of key notice in the trailer, and that was the animation that seemed different from season 1.

As some might remember, the series' first season used CGI as its main animation style, which the fans criticized. However, given the omission of CGI in the movie's first trailer, the animation studio might have learned from the fan feedback, and the upcoming movie might be a treat for anime and manga fans.

Is Chainsaw Man: Reze Movie opting for a non-CGI animation?

Chainsaw Man season 1 might not have been a disaster as a whole, but it was criticized for numerous reasons. The prime reason for this was the use of CGI animation as the main animation style. CGI is usually used to animate giant creatures, but the season used it to animate humans and the majority of aspects, thus leading to criticism from fans.

However, the series' movie might redeem this because its trailer featured a non-CGI animation. The movie will adapt the Bomb Girl arc as the bomb girl, Reze, is showcased in the teaser trailer. Voiced by Reina Ueda, Reze was the spotlight of the trailer as her interactions with Denji, the protagonist, were of key notice.

However, their battle at the end of the trailer, combining aesthetic 2D animation and a beautiful blend of colors, brought the fandom's attention to the possibility that the movie might not include CGI animation. Whether in the action scenes or the regular animation sequences, the trailer showcased that MAPPA studio heard the fan feedback and opted to use pure 2D animation in the upcoming Chainsaw Man movie.

Reaction from the fans

Fans were happy beyond belief, as the majority were happy with the animation shift from CGI to complete 2D animation. Interestingly, some fans thought this change was because of the departure of Ryuu Nakayama (the director of season 1). While this might be the case, the trailer captured the director's vision and combined a symphony of colors to make it so spectacular.

On the other hand, some fans had different thoughts on the 2D animation shift, claiming that it might be because of the Bomb Girl Arc being a movie. As some fans might already know, the production of an animated movie is longer and more lenient than a TV anime adaptation, so this might also be a factor in the movie's animation shift.

"THEY SIMPLIFIED THE CHARACTERS AND GOT RID OF CGI OMG FINALLY I HOPE IT STAYS THIS WAY," a fan said.
"THE CHAINSAW MAN REZE MOVIE LOOKS SO GOOD WTF," another one said.
"OH THEY MIXED NAKAYAMA'S CINEMATIC WITH IT SO WELL EVERY DRAWING FEELS LIKE A MANGA PENAL AND CINEMATIC AT THE SAME TIME THE COMP IS SOO GOOD," another fan said.
"Its a movie so the animation change was expected. Can't expect the same from a 'possible' season 2 as MAPPA might revert back to CGI," another fan noted.

Final thoughts

As the last fan reaction quoted, the animation shift might be due to the recent Chainsaw Man sequel being a movie. The series might revert to its CGI animation in a season 2, given it receives a season 2 adaptation. However, take this information with a grain of salt and expect good things from the Reze Movie, which might showcase the true essence of Tatsuki Fujimoto's artwork.
