MAPPA's new original anime Bucchigiri is a must-watch for fans if you are a fan of Tokyo Revengers, the popular anime series about a time-traveling delinquent who try to change the fate of his friends and rivals.

The anime, which was announced at the MAPPA Stage 2023 event on May 21, is scheduled to premiere in January 2024. It features a similar story of a young man who gets involved in battles among powerful individuals after reuniting with his former friend.

Bucchigiri: MAPPA'S new anime to rival Tokyo Revengers?

The teaser visual and trailer reveal a dark and gritty setting, with a cast of delinquents sporting tattoos, piercings, and scars. The protagonist, Araji Tomobishi, is a timid and ordinary high school student who reunites with his childhood friend Mataka Asamine, who is the charismatic and feared leader of a gang, Bucchigiri.

Asamine invites Tomobishi to join his group and fight against other gangs who are vying for supremacy in the city. However, the latter soon realizes that he has bitten off more than he can chew, as he faces deadly enemies and a mysterious threat that looms over all of them.

The anime seems to share many similarities with Tokyo Revengers, such as the themes of friendship, rivalry, violence, and redemption. Both anime also feature a protagonist who is initially weak and timid but gradually grows stronger and more confident as he faces various challenges and dangers. They also have a mix of realistic and fantastical elements.

However, Bucchigiri also has some differences from Tokyo Revengers, such as the originality of its story and characters. Unlike the latter, which is based on a manga by Ken Wakui, Bucchigiri is an original work by Hiroko Utsumi, Taku Kishimoto, MAPPA, and Toho.

This means that the anime will not be limited by any source material and will have more creative freedom to explore its own ideas and direction. Moreover, Bucchigiri seems to have a more modern and urban setting than Tokyo Revengers, which is set mostly in the past.

Bucchigiri is directed by Hiroko Utsumi, who also worked on Banana Fish and SK8 The Infinity, and written by Taku Kishimoto, who also handled the series composition for Ousama Ranking. The character design is done by Takahiro Kagami, who also worked on Zettai Karen Children. Music is composed by Michiru Oshima, who also created the soundtrack for Yagate Kimi ni Naru.

The upcoming series is one of the most anticipated anime projects by MAPPA, which is known for producing high-quality anime such as Vinland Saga, Jujutsu Kaisen, Attack on Titan: The Final Season, Chainsaw Man, and more.

With its talented staff, intriguing premise, and stunning visuals, Bucchigiri is sure to be an exciting and thrilling anime that will appeal to fans of Tokyo Revengers and other action-packed thriller anime alike.
