McDonald's X Evangelion anime promo has fans wanting to "order an unhappy meal"

A McDonald's X Evangelion anime collaboration happened on Christmas when the worldwide fast food chain released the Japanese promo. It features a promotional video of everyone's favorite characters from this Gainax production ordering a happy meal, which fans worldwide reacted to.

The Evangelion anime has been one of the most popular series in the West and has managed to build a massive following. Therefore, this collaboration with the Japanese branch of McDonald's was not only a success because of both franchises' popularity, but also because of how connected this anime has been to meme culture throughout the years.

It was recently announced through a promotional video that the McDonald's X Evangelion anime collaboration is going to run for a limited time, starting on January 6 of the next year. This menu is going to feature Cheese Double Teriyaki and Mexican Cheese Chicken, although the trailer got most of the attention since it featured the return of the iconic voice actors of Shinji Ikari, Gendo Ikari, and many more.

The rest of the menu includes includes ͏the Cheese ͏Double Teriyaki, Thick-Cut Potato & Juicy Beef ͏with Rich Garlic Mayo, and Mexican Cheese Chicken, all coupled with specific designs in the boxes that capture the series' Evas and how they operate in the franchise. It is also an entertaining juxtaposition between the jovial tone of the video and the serious nature of the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime.

Another element that got a lot of people's attention was the fact that this menu was inspired by the anime’s iconic Absolute Terror (A.T.) Fields, adding a bit more context to the fandom's excitement. Both collectors of Mcdonald's and the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime are interested in this collaboration since it could be a nice addition for them.

The Evangelion anime is not only one of the most celebrated series in the history of the industry because of dark themes, execution, visual imagery, and so on, but also one of the biggest sources of memes in the medium. That is because there have been several memes made throughout the years about Asuka's political leanings, Shinji's states of depression, or Misato's antics in the series.

Therefore, it's not surprising to see such popular reactions online after this McDonald's X Evangelion collaboration. It fits with the nature of the likes of Shinji, Asuka, and Misato after so many years connected to the world of meme culture.

"I didn’t even need captions to understand that this means McDonnalds is gonna have an Evangelion burger," someone said.

"McDs is honestly goated for this," another person said.
