Mei Mei wasn't as useless during the Sukuna fight as everyone thought, and Jujutsu Kaisen finally reveals why

Sukuna's fight with the sorcerers in Jujutsu Kaisen has arguably been one of the most eventful and unpredictable battles in the entire story. While almost every sorcerer introduced in the series took part in the fight against Sukuna, Mei Mei was one of the few who did not come face-to-face with him.

Mei Mei's actions throughout the fight were limited to monitoring and distractions using her crows, which led many fans to believe she had little impact on the overall battle. However, alleged spoilers from Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 269 reveal that Mei Mei may have been one of the key drivers behind Yuji's growth and, by extension, Sukuna's defeat.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Mei Mei's role was integral to Sukuna's defeat

Mei Mei has been one of the most mysterious and unpredictable characters in the entire series. She first appeared during the Kyoto Goodwill Event arc and later became a recurring character throughout the Shibuya Incident arc. Her cursed technique, revealed to be the manipulation of crows, allows her to imbue them with cursed energy and use them as projectiles and surveillance drones. She is one of the stronger Grade A sorcerers, wielding an axe as her primary weapon.

Although she is relatively powerful compared to sorcerers like Ino, Mei Mei did not physically engage in the fight against Sukuna, limiting her role to monitoring and providing support.

This led many fans to question her overall impact on the plot. Alleged spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 269 revealed that the New Shadow Style Simple Domain, which laid the foundation for Yuji's growth and was one of his key techniques in the fight against Sukuna, could not be easily learned.

The technique was governed by several restrictions imposed by the head of the New Shadow Style group, with new learners having to adhere to unfair terms. The Simple Domain, a barrier technique, facilitated the creation of Yuji's domain and enhanced his durability against Sukuna, making it a pivotal factor in Yuji's growth and Sukuna's eventual defeat.

Mei Mei sought out and eliminated the former New Shadow Style head, allowing Kusakabe to become the new head and remove the restrictions, eventually enabling Yuji to learn the technique. This event made Mei Mei the most significant contributor to Sukuna's defeat, Yuji's growth, and Megumi's survival, as all were connected to Yuji mastering domain techniques, except for Yuta and Gojo.

Final Thoughts

The revelation that the New Shadow Style school is almost as influential as the three big families of jujutsu was arguably one of the biggest lore reveals in the story. Although Kusakabe became the current New Shadow Style master, Mei Mei mentioned the fall of both the Gojo and Kamo clans.

The Kamo clan was brought down by Kenjaku, who eliminated the clan head, while the fate of the Gojo clan remains completely unrevealed. Given that the birth of a Gojo clan member with the Six Eyes has been established as a rare but recurring event, the next two chapters may either reveal this clan or show Gojo’s return in the background.
