Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation season 2 kills off an important character before its finale

With the arrival of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation season 2 episode 22, all eyes were set on Paul and his party’s last ordeal at Rapan’s labyrinth, which was the sixth level. Being a challenging level to accomplish, the group stepped forward with a little assurance that they would rescue Zenith and make it out alive.

However, the only person who couldn't care less if he died was Paul, who was only focused on one thing, which was rescuing his wife who was likely stuck there. On arriving at the sixth level, they breathed a sigh of relief that Zenith was indeed there, but the only thing standing between her and Paul’s group was a Hydra.

The motley crew formed in a short period demonstrated impressive coordination and Paul took most of the spotlight with his swordplay and physical strength. At the end of the episode he cherished his resolve to save his wife, but, unfortunately, it came at the cost of losing his life.

In the Isekai series, it has often been noticed that adventurers discuss their positions and roles before embarking on a quest or getting in a fight.

However, watching his wife completely frozen in the ice behind a ginormous Hydra inflicted Paul with such a rage that he couldn’t stop rushing towards the creature after unsheathing his sword.

As seen in Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation season 2 episode 22, even on his own, Paul managed to hold his ground with ease whilst dealing with several heads of the Hydra simultaneously. However, even with his sheer strength and battle proficiency, it wouldn’t have lasted long so Rudeus and Roxy tried to provide him support.

Unfortunately, the Hydra’s scream negated any magic-based attacks, so it was Paul who could defeat the creature from point-blank range. The group decided to exit to the previous level and form a strategic plan. Paul was frustrated that Rudeus was not at all affected by seeing his mother in that position.

Unbeknownst to him, given the separation from her mother after he left home at the age of seven, she almost became a stranger to him, but he too was resolved to save his mother even if it cost his life. Given Hydra could completely regrow its head it became challenging to keep up with the beast.

Based on the mythical lores of Hercules, Rudeus suggested cauterizing the area after beheading the Hydra’s heads. Rudeus took the charge of incinerating the wounds of Hydra and Paul advanced with all his might. Together in perfect tandem, they beheaded all of the Hydra’s heads, except for one that caught Rudeus off guard and was about to attack him.

However, Paul saved him by kicking him away. Rudeus found this as his perfect chance to pluck the last head's eyes and used disturbance magic, which cost him losing his left hand. Later, Roxy incinerated the last head, and they finally defeated the Hydra.

Despite losing his hand, Rudeus was relieved that they finally defeated the creature.

However, Rudeus’ happiness turned into an unexpected nightmare after he found Paul lying dead in front of him with his body severed in two halves. Rudeus went into a state of deep shock and couldn’t think of anything else but stand staring at Paul’s face.

During his last breath, Paul was found smiling given he accomplished saving Zenith. Paul’s body was cremated on the sixth floor, given there was no way his party could take him out. Lilia was saddened by the news and asked Rudeus to take some rest, as she knew that the emotional toll on him was too much to take.

Zenith woke up from being unconscious for almost ten years sealed inside an ice block. Rudeus and Lilia were even more devastated after learning that Zenith lost her memories and couldn’t speak and recognize anyone.

Paul’s death and Zenith’s memory loss left an indelible scar on Rudeus, marking the beginning of a new chapter filled with grief as he has yet to break the news to others, especially Aisha and Norn.

The next episode will be an emotional rollercoaster, as Rudeus navigates through another harrowing ordeal, which will be very difficult to overcome.
