My Deer Friend Nokotan episode 1 was released on July 7, 2024. The series was one of the most anticipated ones from the Summer Anime Season for 2024, not because of its plotline, but because of a clip from the trailers that showcased its comedic genius.

The first episode delivered in every aspect, the main aspect of which was the "comedy" of the show. However, the series forgot to make sense of its plotline due to this main aspect. Although there aren't many fans who notice this while enjoying the humor of the series, it certainly would affect the series in the long run.

The chemistry between the protagonists, Torako and Nokotan, was also satisfactory, but judging the series' performance on one episode would be inaccurate. So, in this article, everything will be explained as to what My Deer Friend Nokotan episode 1 has to offer, be it comedy or the things it needs to work on in the future.

Disclaimer: This article contains potential spoilers from My Deer Friend Nokotan episode 1 and has the author's opinion.

My Deer Friend Nokotan episode 1 review: The characters, the humor, and everything related - the good parts

Starting with the characters, Nokotan is one of the funniest characters in the media and she doesn't even realize how funny she is. From the scene where she was introduced to the scene where Torako was forced to become the president of the club where she would take care of Nokotan, she is the star of the show as indicated by My Deer Friend Nokotan episode 1.

On the other hand, Torako is the average anime protagonist who complies with doing anything without questioning the situation itself. Her background as a delinquent went against her so that Nokotan could rise to the top as the favorite character from the series.

Now, the elephant in the room and the aspect that matters the most, the humor. Humor can take two shapes: either focus entirely on a single point, like Shimoneta did on ecchi scenes, or create funny scenes and involve the whole cast in it, like the famous comedy anime like Konosuba, Nichijou, and Grand Blue. As for the show, it did both, as seen in My Deer Friend Nokotan episode 1.

The majority of the premise lies around the deer girl and the nemesis of Torako, Nokotan, but the show doesn't forget others. Involving Torako, the class, and even the teacher in the slapstick comedy in a single episode showcased the series' bright future as one of the best comedy series.

As much as humor is important, so is voice acting. Megumi Han (Nokotan) and Saki Fujita (Torako) made the series funny with their expressive voice acting that perfectly suited each scene of My Deer Friend Nokotan episode 1. Lastly, the animation was perfect, which was expected by the animation studio giant Wit Studio.

My Deer Friend Nokotan episode 1 review: The best part of the series is also its biggest glitch

Nokotan might be the real showrunner of the series, but she would forever remain the question mark for fans who try to make a little sense out of the show, as seen in My Deer Friend Nokotan episode 1.

Nokotan possesses deer ateliers, which are only present on male deers, but the protagonist calls herself a girl. This makes her gender the biggest confusion in the series. Moreover, the students and teacher of her class just accepted her with open arms and ignored the fact that she had ateliers on her head, something which Torako was mad about throughout My Deer Friend Nokotan episode 1.

Moreover, the biggest issue is that, just like Torako, the anime is expecting the fandom to accept this plothole without any explanation. Not to mention that Torako lost her #1 spot to a deer girl's first day at school, which adds to the absurdness of the anime series' plotline.

Final thoughts (Anime versus manga)

Horror and comedy genres can either make or break an anime adaptation by just a few mistakes. While the former genre is solely focused on the art style, the latter is entirely focused on the narrative and the way of delivering humor.

Compared to the source, almost 50% of My Deer Friend Nokotan episode 1 consisted of anime-original content. The scene where Nokotan smashes the classroom door and potentially kills half of her new classmates, the scene where a river flows out of her mouth after witnessing deer crackers, and the majority of the spotlight scenes from the anime were anime-original.

Wit Studio deserves praise for such a thing as My Deer Friend Nokotan episode 1 told the fandom that it could be the successor of comedy classics like Konosuba and Nichijou by improvising the source material efficiently.

The infinite abyss of comedy anime series is enough to tell the fandom how bad comedy is nothing short of an eyesore, so good things are expected from the future of My Deer Friend Nokotan.
