My Hero Academia chapter 389 was officially released earlier today, bringing with it a short and exciting issue for the series. Here, a focus is given to Dabi/Toya’s current state, both mentally speaking and as it relates to his imminent explosion. Updates on both fronts are seemingly welcome by fans thus far, especially on the matter of the former.
In addition, My Hero Academia chapter 389 suggests that Shoto and Iida will be imminently arriving at Dabi’s location sometime in the next few chapters. While nothing is concrete in terms of perspective with mangaka Kohei Horikoshi, this appears to be the case. However, fans will only know for sure with the release of the next several issues.
My Hero Academia chapter 389 is short but solid, highlighting Dabi’s true desires while setting up Shoto’s arrival
My Hero Academia chapter 389 begins with a continued focus on the Todoroki family, where all but Shoto are gathered around Toya/Dabi and using their ice to cool themselves and him down. Endeavor is also still bear-hugging Toya here, seemingly preparing to end his own life along with Toya’s in the impending explosion.
While it’s said they are successful at decreasing the rate of temperature increase, calculations done at headquarters show that the likelihood of explosion hasn’t decreased. In other words, Toya will inevitably explode at some point soon. Cutting back to the Todrooki family, Rei, Natsuo, and Fuyumi are badly burnt, but are still using their ice to cool themselves and Toya down.
My Hero Academia chapter 389 then sees Dabi acknowledge that everyone is looking at him, with a panel of a pained Endeavor staring his son in the face appearing next. As cracks appear in his face, Toya says that if it really was this simple, it should’ve happened sooner. This is interspersed with other Pro Heroes fighting the Twice clones saying to retreat, with Uraraka being shown squaring off against Toga.
The issue then sees civilians and heroes running away from the scene, while some kids are shown to be watching the event on a livestream. A news helicopter remains in the area, trying to capture and commentate the scene despite the risks. The child, who once praised Endeavor for still being “here,” is seen watching the livestream and appears to be praying for thr Pro Hero.
My Hero Academia chapter 389 then cuts back to the Philippines, which is where the children watching the livestream earlier are shown to be. A woman is seen praying as the children comment on how they still have “Five Wienies,” which is the name they gave to Shoto during the mini-arc focused on him and Bakugo getting their licenses.
As the kids say this, an image of Tenya Iida and Shoto appears, with them seemingly appearing like a jet as they race towards Gunga. Shoto is also shown to already have his fire activated, seemingly getting his Phosphor attack ready for when he arrives. The chapter ends with this panel, suggesting Shoto and Iida's imminent arrival at the scene.
My Hero Academia chapter 389: In summation
Despite being a short chapter, My Hero Academia chapter 389 is still fairly engaging. An update on both the status of Dabi and that of Iida and Shoto is certainly welcome, especially when it suggests that Shoto will join his family shortly. The subtle Uraraka update is also refreshing, suggesting that this is the series’ next focus once the Dabi situation is resolved.
Dabi’s moment of realization for what he’s always wanted is also incredibly heartbreaking, which plays a major role in boosting the quality of this chapter. It’s an exceptional choice by Horikoshi and emphasizes that at the end of the day, all Dabi wanted was love and to truly feel like a part of the family. Hopefully the Todoroki family drama narrative ends in such a way where he has the opportunity to finally feel what it’s like.
