My Hero Academia season 7 episode 8 reveals how Dabi survived as the two Todoroki brothers clash

My Hero Academia season 7 episode 8 opening events: Dabi reveals how he survived

My Hero Academia season 7 episode 8 begins with Dr. Kyudai Garaki, in prison, talking with an officer about the war. The narrative then shifts to where the previous episode ended, with Shoto Todoroki and Endeavor’s sidekicks confronting Dabi. Dabi tells Shoto about his past, revealing how he survived the fire at Sekoto Peak and became Dabi.

The flashback starts with a despaired young Toya at Sekoto Peak as his quirk goes out of control. The burning Toya falls into a river. The scene then returns to Dr. Garaki explaining Toya’s story to the officer, stating that Toya was born with a twisted heart. A brief scene shows an unknown man in a hat (likely AFO) finding the burnt and unconscious Toya, hinting at how he survived and transformed into Dabi.

My Hero Academia season 7 episode 8 then shifts to Toya, now older, waking up in a hospital. Confused about his survival, he encounters other children who inform him that he’s been asleep for three years. A guard and a voice from a computer tell him that he cannot return home.

The voice explains that it took strenuous efforts to heal him, and his severely damaged body is now incapable of withstanding his quirk and dulled his sense of pain and reflexes. Devastated, Toya is told that he must stay with them if he hopes to be restored, but he refuses and runs away.

Dr. Garaki states even “the man with absolute control” (likely AFO) couldn’t contain him. He explains that the facility was meant for raising spare vessels for AFO’s contingency plan in case Shigaraki failed. Dabi was considered a failed experiment, with Garaki warning the officer about his feral nature.

The narrative shows Dabi returning home. Garaki mentions that they allowed him to escape, expecting him to die within a month due to his weakened body. However, Dabi survives. In a conversation with Garaki, Dabi reveals that he knew it was Garaki who saved him as Garaki realizes that Dabi's grudge against Endeavor fueled his survival.

The scene shifts to Dabi and Shoto, where Dabi reveals that he went back home, hoping his supposed death would bring some change. However, he was disappointed to see no change, which triggered his transformation.

In My Hero Academia season 7 episode 8, the narrative returns to the present as Dabi prepares to face Shoto. Dabi declares that he has focused on honing his flames ever since he decided to confront Endeavor, and now he no longer feels pain even as his body burns.

Shoto understands Dabi’s suicidal motives while Garaki notes that even the greatest evil, AFO, rejects Dabi, referring to him as the frenzied inferno of death. As Dabi prepares to burn everything, Shoto, acknowledging that Dabi’s heat is hotter than his own, readies himself to stop him. Flashbacks reveal how Dabi strengthened his flames despite his weakened body.

Dabi uses Endeavor’s Flashfire Fist and Hell Spider while Endeavor’s sidekicks cover for Shoto, who prepares his next move. However, Dabi attacks Shoto with incredible speed, expressing his frustration for Shoto. Despite colliding with a building, Shoto survives and attacks with his new move, a version of Flashfire Fist he designed to counter Dabi.

He explains that he created this move by combining both his quirks to negate Dabi’s flames. A flashback shows Shoto's resolve to defeat Dabi and him showing Deku the new move he developed. Shoto then attacks Dabi with his Flashfire Fist Phosphor. Dabi withstands it. But, Shoto, only able to maintain the stance for a short while, loses Phosphor.
