The Naruto fandom, like many others, has been deeply passionate about its ships. Be it canon or not, they were up for debate and ready to express their opinions whenever required. One recent development in the fandom shows their relief about how the series ended its relationships. Unlike My Hero Academia fans, who were heavily advocating "BakuDeku," they were thankful it ended the way it did.
Given the interactions between Izuku Midoriya, or Deku, and Katsuki Bakugo throughout My Hero Academia, many were convinced they would end up together. However, creator Kohei Horikoshi had other plans, pairing the always-obvious ship of Deku and Ochaco Uraraka instead. Needless to say, this spelled displeasure for BakuDeku advocates, leading to the reaction from the Naruto fans.
BakuDeku shippers' fate convinces Naruto fans that they avoided a similar fortune
Shippers of Bakugo and Deku from My Hero Academia were left gravely disappointed by the series' end. Given the kind of interactions they witnessed the pair have in the series, many felt that there was a chance that this ship would materialize by the conclusion. However, that did not happen, as Deku and Uraraka were the ones who clearly had feelings for each other.
As such, there was displeasure among a section of the My Hero Academia fandom. The fans believed that there was something budding between Bakugo and Deku, but in reality, there wasn't, as made evident in the series. Their relationship was one purely based on respect, admiration, and the view of being a Hero.
By the end, BakuDeku shippers were unhappy that the series showed no intention of steering in their preferred direction. Furthermore, BakuDeku shippers began calling out mangaka Horikoshi after chapter 431.
As a result, fans of Naruto took this opportunity to express that they "dodged that bullet" with regard to Naruto and Sasuke. Similar to BakuDeku, there were a few fans who pushed for "NaruSasu." After all, the blonde only ever wanted to bring back Sasuke, and that was his driving force for a major part of the series.
Needless to say, some felt that there were underlying feelings between the two, which was apparently not true. However, unlike BakuDeku fans, the NaruSasu fandom felt no impulse to call out mangaka Kishimoto.
Naruto fans feel they avoided disaster with the NaruSasu ship
Fans of Kishimoto's magnum opus expressed a sort of relief at how their fandom reacted to a similar setting as My Hero Academia. NaruSasu shippers were not too happy either when the series ended, but they weren't as displeased. Also, as mentioned, they kept it within their bases, not stepping forth to confront the author about it.
"It's impressive how Sasunaru fans kept it chill despite all the intense material!" an X user posted.
"We all saw the tension, but somehow we dodged that bullet," another user added.
One fan was impressed with how well their fandom handled the situation. Given the sheer size of the Naruto fanbase, logic dictates that these shippers too would be very large in number. Even the source material had a moment or two which could be seen as hinting at a canon NaruSasu ship. However, it never happened, and this side of fans remained "chill."
"Well back then people were more sane and had a better grasp of a deep friendship vs romance. Most people who shipped them did it to troll as well," a fan wrote.
Another section justified that there was likely a misunderstanding between romance and friendship. In both cases, the pair of protagonists never harbored romantic feelings for each other. Instead, they viewed each other as capable rivals, later growing to develop mutual respect and admiration. Furthermore, even if the shipping took place, it was mostly to poke fun and not very serious.
"Bakudeku fans have a different level of energy, but salute to the peace-loving behavior of Sasunaru fandom!" a netizen commented.
Another side of the Shinobi-centric series was in awe of the BakuDeku shippers' enthusiasm. Being passionate about an anime/manga is one thing, but these netizens felt that the shippers were too passionate. However, their response aside, the shippers did show that they stood by My Hero Academia till the very end. In comparison, NaruSasu shippers were seemingly way calmer.
"If Naruto came out today it definitely would’ve. I remember even back then sasunaru was around with a niche group. It got played off a lot as a joke," another netizen opined.
One internet user opined that if Naruto had been a more modern anime, the response would have been identical. In essence, the NaruSasu shippers would resemble the BakuDeku ones in terms of passion and push for their favored ship. At the time of the series' release, the shippers represented a smaller group, hence the reactions were not felt that much, which would have been different today.
