Given the current situation, the Naruto remake's release looks like it has hit an impregnable wall. So far, the animation studio for the world-renowned series, Studio Pierrot, has remained silent on any details regarding a reboot of the popular anime.
Needless to say, animanga fans are concerned and are on high alert for the tiniest bit of information. Initially, to appease fans, the studio did mention quite a vague release window, but that was that, i.e., no follow-up information or dates were revealed.
However, with the way things are going, Studio Pierrot's silence on the matter might be the biggest hint to us not receiving the remake any time soon or possibly ever.
Studio Pierrot remaining tight-lipped hints at the Naruto remake being called off
A Naruto remake has seemingly been in the works for a while now. A four-episode special was announced to commemorate the Naruto anime's 20th anniversary. In essence, the remake would combine the modern elements of animation and design, to further enhance Masashi Kishimoto's magnum opus. This responsibility fell upon Studio Pierrot, the anime's original animating studio.
In March 2023, the official Naruto website revealed that four new episodes of anime were in production. Episode 1 of the 4 was to drop in September 2023 for all to enjoy. However, time passed and no such thing happened. Moreover, the original post did not specify the content of the new episodes or the section of the series' timeline it would take place.
Addtionaly, the Naruto remake's release was pushed back a few more days on the executive decision "to create a work that meets everyone's expectations". Through the official X account, the studio apologized but yet clarified nothing about the release date or content. Since then, there has been tons of speculation and build-up, but no official information.
In May 2024, an individual involved in the project spoke to TV Tokyo and referred to a tentative release window, stating the Naruto remake would be released "this fiscal year". They also spoke of distribution and expanding the remake into different regions, such as Latin America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
This would mean that the Naruto remake could be released from now until the end of the present fiscal year (March 31, 2025). However, the studio did not officially confirm this information as time passed. This continued silence might be a hint for the project being called off and their focus shifting to other projects at hand.
In Conclusion
Considering all this information, the studio itself has been awfully quiet. Such a large release window and its being tentative hints at the likelihood of the project being put on ice. Studio Pierrot is, after all, a significant name in the business and has its hands full with other projects like Boruto, Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War, Black Clover, etc.
Also, scrolling through Pierrot's X handle reveals a lot of attention to the airing of Tokyo Ghoul: RE. This could be an indicator that that's what they are focusing on. Moreover, Pierrot celebrated its 45th anniversary in May 2024, a promotional video for which was released showcasing its journey through the years. Given these facts, the Naruto remake could likely be called off for the time being.
