Without a doubt, one of the most unpredictable manga series in recent weeks has been none other than author and illustrator Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man. The series has received so much attention as a result of its recent developments that it has reclaimed the top spot on MANGA Plus' rankings chart in the last few weeks.
Chainsaw Man chapter 170, officially released earlier this week, saw this trend continue in a truly unpredictable fashion via the death of Control Devil Nayuta. In the issue, fans saw her death confirmed via her severed head rolling down a sushi conveyor belt on a plate, eventually passing Denji and co’s seats as the issue ended.
While Nayuta’s death has yet to be officially confirmed, Chainsaw Man fans are all but certain that she is indeed dead. In the meantime, Famine Devil Fami’s reaction, or lack thereof, to Nayuta’s death in chapter 170 has become a major focus, likely indicating what her true goal has been all along this arc.
Chainsaw Man chapter 170 all but confirms Famine Devil Fami’s plans via her reaction to Nayuta’s death
In Chainsaw Man chapter 170’s final pages, fans saw Denji and the others react differently to the reveal of Nayuta's death. Denji, for example, was too shocked to even truly react, while Katana Man and Asa Mitaka expressed disgust at the gruesome way her death was revealed. But one very noticeable response that fans missed was that of Famine Devil Fami.
While fans don’t know if Fami did react or not, what’s significant is that Fujimoto deliberately structured the closing panels in a way in which fans cannot see Fami’s reaction. In other words, Fujimoto likely implies that she had no reaction to this revelation, which is noteworthy; it could also be argued that this is equivalent to saying she is indifferent.
This interpretation is also further supported by the fact that earlier on in Chainsaw Man chapter 170, Fami shows no reaction to the bickering between Barem and Denji. Asa Mitaka even specifically brings this to her attention and looks to her for a reaction or response, but Fami instead silently stares ahead while she continues eating her food.
Already, this suggests that she is aware of what is about to happen, and when combined with the fact that Fujimoto specifically concealed her reaction, it appears that she was aware of Nayuta's death. In turn, this confirms that her true motivations in recent weeks have been to build Denji up with the hope that they can find Nayuta and that people will help him, all to tear it down with her death.
Considering Fami’s established role as one of the leaders of the Church, whom Barem represents and, per his own words, acts on behalf of in the issue, her recent reaction aligns with her supposed motivations. With all of this in mind, it’s clear that Fami’s true motivation all along has been to further her own plans, going back at least as far as rescuing Denji and possibly even further back to recruiting Asa into the Church.
Now, with Denji spiritually broken once again, it seems Fami will get her wish via the Hero of Hell’s return in the coming issue. Likewise, fans will finally learn what the endgame of Fami, Barem, and the Church’s actions have been. While they themselves allege that it’s to shield the world from the Death Devil, there’s almost certainly one or more ulterior motives at play.
