The first episode of the anime adaptation of Yukinobu Tatsu's Dandadan series was recently released on Thursday, October 3, 2024, which kicked off one of the most anticipated anime releases of this year.
It also marked the beginning of the misadventures of the dynamic duo of Momo Ayase and Ken Takakura, who unknowingly stepped foot into the bizarre world of aliens and spirits after a chance encounter.
The first episode of the Dandadan anime saw a majority of the fans praising Studio Science Saru for doing a spectacular job bringing the beloved manga to life. That said, some eagle-eyed fans pointed out a major change in the first episode, which was a scene involving the former president of the United States, Barack Obama.
Dandadan episode 1 makes a major change to Barack Obama's scene from the manga
Episode 1 of the Dandadan anime adapted the first chapter of Yukinobu Tatsu's magnum opus in a near-perfect manner. Without a doubt, Studio Science Saru managed to flawlessly translate some of the most iconic moments from the pages of the manga into the anime.
This earned them an overwhelming amount of praise from the fans. However, some eagle-eyed fans pointed out one particular change the animation studio made while adapting the manga.
In the first chapter of the manga, when Ken Takakura tries to convince Momo Ayase of the existence of aliens, he shows her one of the pages from a book he was reading. The book apparently stated that the erstwhile President of the United States, Barack Obama, had already visited the planet Mars and that the information about it was all laid out in "Project Pegasus."
However, in the anime, this scene was slightly changed by Studio Science Saru, who replaced Barack Obama with an unnamed person as the President of the United States. While this cannot exactly be classified as a major change to the series in the grand scheme of things, it was, regardless, a noticeable change that caught the attention of many fans.
Fans react to Science Saru replacing the Obama panel in the Dandadan anime
After noticing the change made by Studio Science Saru to the Obama panel in the Dandadan anime, fans started speculating about the identity of the person who was shown to be the President of the United States.
As such, some started wondering whether the individual was supposed to be President Joe Biden, former President Donald Trump, or an entirely new character created just for the sake of replacing the Obama panel from the manga. On the other hand, some claimed that they would never recover from the change made to the anime by Science Saru.
"Is that supposed to be Trump cause that for sure isn’t Biden", one fan asked.
"Weird they go with a generic instead of Obama. Then again it "kind of" looks like Trump", said one fan.
"I had to hold back a scream when I saw this for the first time, literally unwatchable", one fan claimed.
Some tried to speculate about the reason behind Studio Science Saru making this change. They claimed that the animation studio may have simply wanted to avoid any problems and chose to stick to a generic character design.
"Studio wanted to avoid any problems probably. so always stick to generic US president", one fan suggested.
"Yeah most likely a random design given they didn't say a name like they did in the manga" another fan said.
"Most likely, the studio wished to prevent any difficulties. So always stay with generic US President", another chimed in.
Final Thoughts
While an animation studio making a change like this certainly isn't unprecedented in the anime world, it is interesting to see how the fandom reacts to such changes and their implications for the story in the long run.
