On Friday, October 20, 2023, several prominent Japanese companies, including Shueisha, celebrated 25 years of the One Piece anime. These celebrations saw the release of five commercials from five companies, each featuring a prominent Japanese actor or voice actor.

The five commercials were then collected into one compilation video, which was then uploaded to the One Piece franchise’s official YouTube channel for all fans to view. The actors and voice actors seen in each of the respective commercials make it clear that they’re major fans of author and illustrator Eiichiro Oda’s best-selling manga series.

The release of the five commercials also coincides with the return of One Piece Film: Red to Japanese theaters, which officially began this past Friday. The film is also represented in one of the commercials with voice actresses Kaori Nazuka and Yuno Nakao singing along with Uta at a film screening.

One Piece anime celebrates 25 years with live-action’s Zoro, anime’s voice of Blackbeard, and more

As mentioned above, five companies produced a commercial to celebrate the coming 25th anniversary of the One Piece anime series. These include Shueisha, Bandai/Bandai Spirits, Bandai Namco Entertainment, Toei, and Toei Animation. All of these are related to the franchise in some way, with the most obvious connections being Shueisha’s publication of the manga and Toei Animation’s production of the television anime adaptation.

Each commercial features one or more prominent voice actors or actors, with two directly associated with the franchise in the form of actor Mackenyu and voice actor Akio Ohtsuka. The former plays Roronoa Zoro in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the original manga series, while the latter voices Marshall D. Teach, or Blackbeard, in the television anime series.

Wataru Ichinose, Subaru Kimura, Shirabe Kawaguchi, Kaori Nazuka, and Sota Fukushi are all also present in the commercial in one way or another. Some are given more central focuses, highlighting their deep love for the series. In contrast, others are seen silently playing one of the franchise’s many video games or enjoying an anime episode at home.

Alongside these commercials, the official YouTube channel for the franchise will launch a new linear stream of the anime to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The stream is entitled “ANYTIME ONEPIECE” and will play throughout 2024 in Japan only. New episodes will be added as they air on television. Given the current amount of episodes released and their average time, each cycle of the full anime’s broadcast will last roughly 18 days.

Bandai Namco Entertainment, Shueisha, and Toei Animation have all previously collaborated on the One Piece Day event, which celebrates the anniversary of the original manga’s debut. The trio held the event again this past year, which primarily focused on the developing Egghead Island arc for the manga and the arrival of Gear 5 in the anime.
