Friday, July 26, 2024, saw Kadokawa officially announce the A Couple of Cuckoos season 2 anime and confirm a general 2025 release window for the series. The news was announced via a new promotional video for the anime, which began streaming, primarily focusing on the announcement itself and showing no footage from the upcoming season.
In addition to the promotional video, a key visual and celebratory illustration for the A Couple of Cuckoos season 2 announcement were also released. Both feature the anime’s central cast of characters, with the illustration being drawn by the original manga’s creator, author, and illustrator, Miki Yoshikawa.
A Couple of Cuckoos season 2 confirmed as in production and for a 2025 release window
The roughly 40-second promotional video announcing the A Couple of Cuckoos season 2 anime series primarily comprises manga panels from Yoshikawa’s original source material. These seem to be panels that will be adapted in season 2, as those characters seen in the panel appear briefly on screen before the second season is officially confirmed for production.
The key visual is a still taken from the trailer, showing the characters as they briefly appear before the trailer confirms the season 2 announcement. The celebratory illustration features three of these characters, with protagonist Nagi Umino among them and holding up a sign with Japanese lettering on it.
The first season premiered in April 2022 and ran for two continuous cours, with Crunchyroll streaming the anime internationally as it aired weekly and also producing an English dub. Hiroaki Akagi was the chief director of the anime, with Yoshiyuki Shirahata directing the series at Shinei Animation and Synergy SP studios. Yasuhiro Nakanishi oversaw the series scripts, while Aya Takano designed the anime’s characters.
A Couple of Cuckoos season 2 will serve as the continuation of the television anime adaptation of Yoshikawa’s original manga series, as mentioned above. The manga first began serialization in January 2020 in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine and is still ongoing and regularly serialized today. As of this article’s writing, the manga has been collected into 23 compilation volumes, with 18 of these 23 being available in English formats.
Kodansha USA Publishing releases the manga in English, describing the romantic comedy series as follows:
“16-year-old super-studier Nagi Umino, second-year student at the Megurogawa Academy high school, was switched at birth. On his way to a dinner to meet his birth parents, he accidentally meets the brash, outspoken, Erika Amano, who is determined to make Nagi her fake boyfriend as she never wants to actually marry."
It continues:
"But once Nagi makes it to dinner, he finds his parents have decided to resolve the hospital switch by conveniently having him marry the daughter his birth parents raised...who turns out to be none other than Erika herself!”
