On Friday, November 15, 2024, Hobby Japan announced the adaption of Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon anime based on the original light novel series of the same name. The full title of the original series is Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon: My Trusted Companions Tried to Kill Me, But Thanks to the Gift of an Unlimited Gacha I Got LVL 9999 Friends and Am Out For Revenge on My Former Party Members.

The announcement of the Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon anime project was made via the official X (formerly Twitter) account for Hobby Japan Novels. The post also featured a video making the announcement, which also commemorated the 10th anniversary of Hobby Japan Novels. The announcement video for the Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon anime primarily focused on celebrating Hobby Japan Novels’ 10th anniversary. This segment showcased some of the publisher's most popular and well-known series before revealing the anime project as the "next" release. Japanese text at the end presumably confirms the Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon anime's 2025 release window.

The light novels first began as a web novel on the Shosetsuka ni Naro website by author Shisui Meikyo in April 2020, and it is still ongoing today. Hobby Japan began publishing light novels with illustrations by tef under the HJ Novels imprint in May 2021, which are also still ongoing today.

Additionally, The series was also adapted into a manga from Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket publication in May 2021 with illustrations by Takafumi Omae, which is also still ongoing today.

The light novel series currently has 10 volumes released in Japanese, with an 11th set to be published on November 19, 2024. Of these 11, eight have been released in English, with a ninth coming on December 19, 2024. The manga adaptation has 14 volumes currently released in Japanese, with six currently released in English. The seventh is planned for release on December 17, 2024, and the eighth on April 15, 2025.

J-Novel Club licenses the light novels for release in English, while Seven Seas licenses the manga for an English release. J-Novel Club describes the original light novels for the Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon anime series as follows:

“When Light is kicked out of the Concord of the Tribes, his former comrades instantly turn on him. Light escapes this diabolical act of betrayal by the skin of his teeth...only to find himself in the deepest part of the Abyss, the most dangerous dungeon in the realm!
