Crunchyroll confirmed the production of Black Butler season 5 at Anime Expo 2024 with an announcement PV, on July 6, 2024. The sequel is set to adapt the Emerald Witch Arc from Yana Toboso's dark fantasy manga and will be released in 2025. The main cast members will be reprising their roles in the upcoming sequel.
Black Butler season 5 serves as a sequel to the recently concluded season 4, which aired 11 episodes from April 2024 to June 2024. Cloverworks Studios will once again take charge of series production, while Crunchyroll will stream the series outside Japan.
Black Butler season 5 will adapt the Emerald Witch Arc from Yana Toboso's manga
Crunchyroll announced at its stage event on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at Anime Expo 2024 that Black Butler season 5, based on Yana Toboso's manga, will be released in 2025. The sequel will cover the critically acclaimed Emerald Witch Arc, the next major arc after Public School Arc from Yana Toboso's dark fantasy manga series.
The anime's official website shared Crunchyroll's unveiling of the announcement promotional video at the event on X. Sadly, the PV doesn't showcase any new scenes besides the ending moments from season 4.
The teaser trailer shows two noblemen confronting a werewolf-like creature in the woods while chasing a fox. The creature's eyes glow, as it turns toward the scene. Aside from this, the PV contains a voiceover from Sebastian Michaelis (voiced by Daisuke Ono), who confirms season 5's production.
Evidently, the teaser PV sets up the Emerald Witch Arc, which has garnered praise from fans for its compelling narrative and interesting characters. At the same time, it was announced that Daisuke Ono and Maaya Sakamoto will reprise their roles as Sebastian and Ciel Phantomhive, respectively.
New voice actors will likely be announced in the future. Besides Daisuke Ono and Maaya Sakamoto, other voice actors from the previous installment are likely to return to voice their characters. However, the anime's team has yet to disclose it.
Kenjiro Okada, who directed the previous season, returns as the director for Black Butler season 5 at Cloverworks. As stated earlier, Crunchyroll will stream the series in 2025 as it airs on Japanese television.
What to expect in Black Butler season 5?
Considering the recently concluded season covered up to the 86th chapter from Yana Toboso's manga, Black Butler season 5 will likely begin the adaptation from the 86th chapter itself, and continue until chapter 107.
The sequel will see Ciel Phantomhive and Sebastian Michaelis investigating a series of mysterious deaths in Germany at the behest of Queen Victoria. The Phantomhive Earl discovers the victims suddenly become grotesquely deformed, only to die a pathetic death afterward.
