Saturday, December 28, 2024 saw the official X (formerly Twitter) account for the Blue Lock season 2 anime series announce Mamoru Miyano’s casting in the series as Michael Kaiser. The announcement comes on the day the final two episodes of the television anime series’ second season air, with Kaiser briefly appearing in the 14th and final episode.

Likewise, with Blue Lock season 2 only set to run for one cour of 14 episodes, it’s expected that fans will next see Kaiser and hear Miyano voicing him in promotional material for season 3. Miyano is otherwise best known as the voice of Demon Slayer’s Douma, Death Note’s Light Yagami, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood’s Ling Yao, Hunter x Hunter’s Chrollo Lucifer, and many more.

Blue Lock season 2 reveals Mamoru Miyano as voice of series’ upcoming major antagonist

The significance behind Blue Lock season 2’s casting of Miyano as Kaiser is the role the character is set to play in the presumably upcoming third television anime season. While the sequel has yet to be officially announced, it’s extremely unlikely that Miyano’s casting would be revealed or teased if that weren’t the plan. Likewise, it’s a safe presumption that a third season is indeed coming, with Kaiser set to be a major part of it.

However, it’s possible that season 3 may still be a ways away, especially considering upcoming projects Miyano is already attached to. This includes the Demon Slayer film trilogy finale, of which Douma will be a major part, Shinichiro Watanabe and MAPPA’s Lazarus, and the upcoming To Be Hero X anime series. Moreover, one concern is the plethora of other projects populating his schedule outside of the anime industry.

This further supports the idea that a delay may be in effect for the third season, and Miyano’s formal debut as Kaiser is the drop in animation quality Blue Lock season 2 suffered. The decline was so sharp and of poor quality that the series was ultimately one of the most discussed of the Fall 2024 season. 8bit Studio will likely take some time to ensure a quality final product for the season, focusing on Kaiser antagonistically.

8bit’s television anime adaptation of author Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrator Yusuke Nomura’s original manga series of the same name began in October 2022. The series ran for 24 episodes across two consecutive cours, airing its 24th and final installment in March 2023. The second season began in October 2024 and ended earlier today, as mentioned above.

Kaneshiro and Nomura’s original manga series began serialization in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine in August 2018. The manga has been collected into 32 compilation volumes as of this article’s writing, with 27 of these volumes officially translated and available in English.
