The latest chapter of author and illustrator Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man manga series was released earlier today, bringing with it the continuation of Asa and Denji’s escape. While the issue was somewhat uneventful, albeit a masterclass in manga artwork, there were a few exciting moments that fans pointed out.

One such scene from the latest release of Chainsaw Man has fans questioning whether or not Fujimoto took inspiration from acclaimed author and illustrator Hiromu Arakawa. More specifically, Fujimoto’s latest monstrosity bears a large resemblance to Gluttony from Arakawa’s world famous Fullmetal Alchemist anime and manga series.

Arakawa is regarded as one of the greatest mangaka of all time, largely for her Fullmetal Alchemist series, making it no surprise that Fujimoto has seemingly taken inspiration from her. While it’s officially unconfirmed that the latest Chainsaw Man design was inspired by Arakawa, the similarities are simply too striking for this not to be the case.

Fullmetal Alchemist’s Gluttony seemingly inspires latest Devil design in Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man

The latest

The 130th chapter of the Chainsaw Man series was released on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, marking the series’ return from a one-week hiatus. While the issue wasn’t a particularly exciting one, as mentioned above, there were a few intriguing moments. One aspect that stood out to fans was the latest Devil character design for the series.

As Denji and Asa were being pursued by their adversary, a situation arose in which they were set up for a trap. The Devil that was pursuing them then had its stomach open up into a full-fledged mouth, complete with a tongue and teeth. On the “lips” of the mouth-stomach lay smaller versions of the tentacles that chased Asa and Denji throughout the issue.

Fans instantly recognized the design as being very similar to that of Homunculus Gluttony from Arakawa’s Fullmetal Alchemist manga series. While one key difference between the two is that Gluttony’s mouth-stomach has an eye instead of a tongue, the designs are nearly identical in every other way. As a result, fans of both series are asserting that Fujimoto is taking inspiration from and tipping his hat to Arakawa here.

The latest chapter for Fujimoto’s manga series comes after the MAPPA Stage event for MAPPA Studios, which animates the series’ television anime adaptation. Fans of Fujimoto’s series were somewhat dissatisfied with the event, as it shared no news on the second cour of the anime series despite many anticipating it to be discussed.

Arakawa’s currently serialized works include Daemons of the Shadow Realm, The Heroic Legend of Arslan, and Hyakusho Kizoku. These can be read in Square Enix’s Monthly Shonen Gangan, Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, and Shinshokan’s Wings publication, respectively.
