Tuesday, October 29, 2024 saw Crunchyroll announce its intent to launch and distribute over 40 anime series, including One Piece and Dragon Ball Daima, on YouTube Primetime Channels. The launch of the platform’s YouTube Primetime Channel is currently scheduled for before the end of the 2024 calendar year in select areas. These areas include the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia.

Crunchyroll has revealed five of the anime which will be available on the platform thus far, which include One Piece, Dragon Ball Daima, Blue Lock, Re:ZERO, and Shangri-La Frontier season 2. Primetime Channels are a means of subscribing to and watching content from various streaming services directly on YouTube via the platform itself.

Crunchyroll’s YouTube Primetime Channel set to include One Piece, Dragon Ball Daima, and more at service’s launch

As of this article’s writing, there is no further information on Crunchyroll’s YouTube Primetime Channel in any significant capacity. This includes how much a subscription to the Primetime Channel will cost, as well as what other anime will be offered beyond the ones above. That being said, the weight the already announced titles carry (such as One Piece and Dragon Ball Daima) suggests that each of the 40+ anime set to be available will be major names.

The news comes following the streamer’s expansion of its services onto other platforms, such as Amazon’s Prime Video channels. The platform’s Fan and Mega Fan subscription tiers are available through the Prime Video service, with access available in the United States, Canada, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and more.

Crunchyroll also collaborated with Sony Pictures Entertainment’s GSN (Game Show Network) to launch a 24/7 liner channel on Amazon Freevee, LG Channels, the Roku Channel, and Vizio WatchFree+. These efforts began in October 2023. Series available at launched included Horimiya, Ranking of Kings, Code Geass, To Your Eternity, Arifureta, Psycho-Pass, Moriarty the Patriot, and Sugar Apple Fairy Tale.

The company also acquired Right Stuf in August 2022 in order to expand its ecommerce service. Right Stuf’s store phased out and migrated all products to its acquirer’s online store in October 2023. The company itself was acquired by Sony’s Funimation Global Group from AT&T in December 2020, with the acquisition completed in August 2021. The purchase price was US$1.175 billion paid in cash at closing, with the Funimation brand now defunct.

Dragon Ball Daima is a currently airing television anime series based on Akira Toriyama’s original Dragon Ball franchise. Toriyama died in March 2024, with Daima being the last project he was personally and significantly involved in. One Piece is the television anime adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s original manga series of the same name. Toei Animation’s adaptation is currently on break, but set to return in April 2025.
