Monday, June 24, 2024, saw the official website for the television Dandadan anime series begin streaming the second promotional video, which chiefly revealed three new cast members. The promotional video also confirmed various theatrical screenings, which will serve as the anime’s early debut starting on August 31, 2024.

These early theatrical screenings of the Dandadan anime are set to run through mid-September and are said to expand to over 50 countries and regions in total as of this article’s writing. Additionally, the series also unveiled a new key visual that features the anime’s central group of characters and monsters/aliens.


Dandadan anime screens in North America on September 13, Europe on September 7

As mentioned above, the Dandadan anime has confirmed its intent to screen early in theaters under the title DAN DA DAN: First Encounter. These screenings will begin in Asia on the aforementioned August 31 date, followed by European screenings starting on September 7, and North American screenings on September 13. No other specific dates were given, but as mentioned above, the screenings will come to over 50 countries and regions eventually.

The newly announced cast includes Nana Mizuki as Seiko Ayase, Momo’s grandmother, Ayane Sakura as Aira Shiratori, a popular girl at Okarun and Momo’s school, and Kaito Ishikawa as Jiji (Jin Enjoji), Momo’s childhood friend and first love. The previously announced starring cast includes Shion Wakayama as Momo Ayase, Natsuki Hanae as Okarun, Mayumi Tanaka as Turbo-Granny, and Kazuya Nakai as Alien Serpo.

Fuga Yamashiro is directing the anime at Science SARU studios, with Hiroshi Seko supervising and writing the series scripts. Composer Kensuke Ushio scores the music, with Naoyuki designing the characters and Yoshimichi Kameda designing the aliens and supernatural entities. Hip-hop duo Creepy Nuts is contributing their new song Otonoke for the anime’s opening theme song.

The series is set to premiere on television in Japan on TBS and MBS’ Super Animeism TURBO programming block. Both Netflix and Crunchyroll will stream the anime internationally as it airs weekly in Japan. GKIDS has acquired the theatrical, videogram, and digital transaction rights for the series internationally.

The Dandadan anime serves as the television anime adaptation of author and illustrator Yukinobu Tatsu’s original manga series of the same name. The series began serialization in April 2021 on Shueisha’s digital Shonen Jump+ publication platform, where it is still ongoing today.

120 of the manga’s 158 chapters have been collected into 14 compilation volumes, with a 15th one releasing in Japan on July 4. Of the published 14 volumes, seven have been translated into English, with two more planned for release in July and October 2024, respectively. Prior to his flagship manga series, Tatsu was best known as an assistant on Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man manga series.
