Friday, October 11, 2024 saw the 20th chapter of the Deadpool: Samurai manga series enter an indefinite hiatus due to “various circumstances” which were not further clarified. The Shonen Jump+ service will announce the manga’s return via its social media accounts and more once a release date is confirmed.
Deadpool: Samurai author Sanshiro Kasama shared a link to the new chapter via his X (formerly Twitter) account with a message of apology to readers. HE added that he couldn’t go into details but expressed his apologies nonetheless. The manga series is illustrated by Hikaru Uesugi.
Fanbase suspects Deadpool: Samurai manga may be catching flak for its recent varied references
As mentioned above, there's no further confirmed information regarding the Deadpool: Samurai manga’s indefinite hiatus. However, many fans are speculating that the recent references the series has been making to other manga series and more could be an issue.
That includes references to Negi Haruba’s The Quintessential Quintuplets, Gosho Aoyama’s Detective Conan, and Yusuke Saito and Jiro Takidaira’s Mochimochi no Ki picture book.
Fans suspect that to be the issue due to mangaka Hideaki Sorachi’s Gintama series suffering from similarly presented hiatuses at similar times of significant parody. Gintama is known as a series which often parodies other beloved manga, which Kasama and Uesugi’s manga is also quickly developing a similar reputation for. However, this is still speculative as of this article’s writing.
Another reason could be that Kasama himself is requesting the hiatus due to personal matters. This would also explain why Kasama felt encouraged to post a short, but seemingly sincere apology to fans via his X account.
That would also explain the indefinite nature of the hiatus depending on the severity of Kasama’s personal matters. However, like the above, it's also speculative and simply exploring possibilities.
The manga originally began as a one-shot from Kasama and Uesugi in October 2019, published to the Shonen Jump+ platform. The manga was a part of a collaboration between Marvel Comics and Shueisha which saw seven manga short stories published on a biweekly basis.
Uesugi and Kasama launched their short series in December 2020, ending it in June 2021. Viz Media released both volumes of the original manga in 2022 as part of this collaboration.
The second “season” of the Deadpool: Samurai manga series was initially announced under the title of Secret Steward, also advertising under this name as a romantic comedy. However, the first chapter’s debut on Thursday, August 8, 2024, saw the series reveal its true nature as a continuation via a surprise twist.
The Deadpool: Samurai manga is set to have its third compilation volume ship in Japan on Wednesday, December 4, 2024. The first two volumes were previously translated into English. It’s likewise expected that the third will have an English release at some point.
