Roughly 18 months after the series’ original conclusion, it was revealed on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, that the Dr. Stone manga series would be launching a new three-chapter spin-off series. Per the latest information, the spin-off series is set to be released starting in next week’s Weekly Shonen Jump issue, which would be the 49th for the 2023 year.
Minimal information on the Dr. Stone manga’s spinoff is available at the time of writing, but it seems that the extra chapters will focus on Senku building a time machine. This information seemingly suggests the extra chapters to be set after the series’ conclusion, with Senku having been working on a time machine in the finale chapter.
The latest information also claims that the first chapter will contain 47 pages and it will also include a color page drawn by the series’ illustrator, Boichi. With the third season heating up and the Dr. Stone manga seemingly set to return, it’s a great time to be a fan of the smash-hit and incredibly unique anime and manga series.
Dr. Stone manga’s return seemingly set to provide conclusive ending to series overall
The latest
One of the main reasons why the Dr. Stone manga is likely returning for a short spin-off is due to how ambiguous the ending of the original manga was. While fans weren’t necessarily displeased at the time, there was a general sentiment that something was missing from the ending, most likely a sense of finality and conclusiveness.
The final chapter of the series saw Taiju and Yuzuriha get married, also revealing what Gen Asagiri, Chrome, Ukyo Saionji, and other members of the Kingdom of Science were up to. The final chapter was also set in a post-revival world where Senku and Co. had discovered the cause of the petrification and dealt with it in a manner that made reviving the earth’s general populace plausible.
Following this, it was revealed that Senku was working on a time machine in order to return to the past and prevent the mass petrification from ever happening in the first place. However, there was no finality given as to whether or not Senku was successful in this effort. As a result, fans can expect this to be the main focus of the spin-off, especially considering pre-release information has already specified that it revolves around Senku’s development of the machine.
The third season of the Dr. Stone manga’s television anime adaptation is currently airing in Japan and internationally on Crunchyroll every Thursday. Fans of the anime looking to read ahead in the manga can find the series fully available on Shueisha’s subscription-based Shonen Jump+ digital manga service.
