Friday, October 4, 2024 saw the Dragon Ball Daima anime make several key announcements, including the new voice of character Yamcha and the anime’s Netflix streaming information. In addition to Crunchyroll, Netflix will also stream the series internationally, but on a week delay whereas Crunchyroll will stream the series weekly as it airs in Japan.
The new voice actor for Yamcha will be Ryota Suzuki, replacing Toru Furuya in the role following the subsequent controversy after news of his affair broke in May 2024. Suzuki will begin his duties with Daima’s first episode. It is presumed, but unconfirmed as of this article’s writing, that Suzuki is the character’s new voice across the entire franchise, rather than specifically and only for Daima.
Dragon Ball Daima begins streaming globally on Netflix on October 18, debuts early in Asia on October 14
Aside from his now upcoming role as Yamcha in Dragon Ball Daima, and presumably beyond for the franchise, Suzuki also has a few other notable roles. The most significant are Kaguya-sama's Yu Ishigami, Wind Breaker’s Toma Hiragi, and Dr. Stone’s Ryusui Nanami. Suzuki also has a significant upcoming role as Heisuke Mashima in the Sakamoto Days anime adaptation, set to premiere in January 2025 on Netflix.
Daima is the second major series to be streamed on both Netflix and Crunchyroll on a weekly basis behind the recently premiered Dandadan. However, whereas Daima will see Netflix’s streams delayed by a week, the company will be streaming Dandadan on a true weekly basis like Crunchyroll. Both platforms will stream Daima’s original Japanese audio with English subtitles.
The streams will be available in the United States, Canada, Latin America including Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, and Southeast Asia. An English dub is being produced for the series, but will be made available for streaming at a later, currently undisclosed date. Toei Animation and Fathom Events are screening the dub’s world premiere for the first three episodes in United States theaters from Sunday, November 10 through Tuesday, November 12.
The series will have its world premiere this weekend on Sunday, October 6 in Japan at the “Dragon Ball Daimatsuri” event. Daimatsuri is a portmanteau of the words “Daima” and “matsuri,” with the latter term meaning festival. The event will be held at Tokyo Big Sight in Japan. Screenings of the first episode will take place at 10AM, 2:15PM, and 6PM Japanese Standard Time. The event is free, but requires a lottery to attain tickets.
Daima serves as the latest anime project in the overarching media franchise, and will also be the last which franchise creator Akira Toriyama was personally and significantly involved in. Toriyama tragically passed away in March 2024 due to an acute subdural hematoma at age 68.
