Wednesday, November 20, 2024, saw author Kanehito Yamada and illustrator Tsukasa Abe’s Frieren manga series announce a two-week break following the release of its latest issue. The news comes via the 52nd and final issue of Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine for the 2024 calendar year.

The Frieren manga, fully titled Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, will likewise return with its 139th chapter overall in Weekly Shonen Sunday’s combined second and third 2025 issue. The magazine’s double publication will be released on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, in Japan. The manga was recently on hiatus from May 15 through August 7.

In addition to this current two-week break and its two–plus month hiatus earlier this year, the manga also took a hiatus from January to March 2023. Yamada and Abe’s original manga series began publication in April 2020. No particular reason was given for the Frieren manga’s two-week break, suggesting nothing is seriously wrong with either Yamada or Abe.

The timing further suggests that this two-week break is meant as a celebration of the end of Weekly Shonen Sunday’s 2024 publication year, which ends before the 2024 calendar year. It’s also possible that the manga is on break so Yamada and/or Abe can be involved with Madhouse’s television anime adaptation.

Madhouse’s anime adaptation of the series aired in Fall 2023 and ran for two consecutive cours. In both Fall 2023 and Winter 2024, it was critically lauded and publicly regarded as one of the best series of the two seasons. A second season is currently in production, which combined with the first season’s success explains why they may be busy assisting Madhouse. While all of this is speculative, it’s not uncommon for mangaka to be heavily consulted for an adaptation.

What is confirmed is the manga’s confirmed return date of Wednesday, December 11, 2024, in Japan. Once released in Japan, the series will be free to read on the VIZ Media official website with official English translations of the series. VIZ Media is also home to the official English compilation volumes, with the 11th released and the 12th coming in February 2025. 127 of the manga’s 138 chapters are collected into 13 currently available Japanese compilation volumes.

The Frieren manga follows Frieren, an elven mage who was a member of the hero Himmel’s party, which defeated the Demon King and restored harmony to the world. Their quest took 10 years, which was just a small portion of Frieren’s long life. The story begins 50 years later when she reunites with her party. However, Himmel dies shortly after, marking the start of an emotional and literal journey for Frieren, who now strives to see Himmel one more time.
