While a narrower release window beyond April 2025 wasn’t provided, the anime did confirm its Japanese broadcast info in its first trailer.

In addition, the From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman anime confirmed its main staff, and revealed a teaser visual as well as two illustrations from the series’ manga and light novel illustrators. While no cast members were announced, this will likely be present in the anime’s next major news release considering a teaser trailer has already been shared.

From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman anime set to join the Spring 2025 broadcast season

The roughly 30-second promotional video for the From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman anime primarily focused on introducing protagonist Beryl Gardinant. Focus was also given to the series’ setting, which seems primarily medieval in nature, as well as making elements like magic clear, suggesting a fantasy approach at least in part.

Akio Kazumi is directing the anime at Passione and Hayabusa Film studios, with Kunihiko Okada in charge of series scripts. Satsuki Hayasaka is designing the characters, and is also serving as the chief animation director. Finally, Yasuharu Takanashi will be composing the music for the series. In April 2025, the anime will premiere on the IMAnimation programming block of 24 TV Asahi affiliate stations, as well as on BS Asahi.

The aforementioned illustrations both focus on protagonist Beryl Gardinant, with one coming from Tetsuhiro Nabeshima who illustrates the light novels. Nabeshima’s sees Beryl striking a defensive pose with his sword while surrounded by text. The other comes from Kazuki Sato, who is the manga adaptation’s illustrator. This illustration sees Beryl looking off in the distance while resting his sword on his shoulder, with some text also present.

Like many other anime series of late, the From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman anime began as a web novel on the Shosetsuka ni Naro website by Shigeru Sagazaki. Square Enix first published the light novel adaptation in April 2021, with the eighth volume releasing in Japan on August 6. A manga adaptation began in Akita Shoten’s Dokodemo Young Champion magazine in August 2021. J-Novel Club has licensed the light novels for release while Yen Press licenses the manga for release.

The story introduces Beryl as a sword instructor at a dojo in a backwater village, having dreamt of glory as a master swordsman in his younger years. He suddenly gets his wish when a former student returns, claiming he’s been appointed as the special instructor for the knights of the Liberion Order. He travels to the capital, reuniting with some of his former students who desire his tutelage despite achieving great things, forcing him to wonder why this is.
