On Monday, January 6, 2025, Crunchyroll informed Sportskeeda Anime via email correspondence about they are set to produce an anime adaptation of the Ghost of Tsushima: Legends game. The anime, produced by Kamikaze Douga, will exclusively premiere on Crunchyroll in 2027.

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is a multiplayer co-op game based on the original title Ghost of Tsushima. The original game follows the story of a samurai Jin Sakai, the sole survivor of his clan during the Mongol invasion of the island of Tsushima. The multiplayer game was released months after the original game was launched.

On January 6, 2025, Sony Group Corporation conducted its Consumer Electronics Show press conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. This conference saw Crunchyroll, Aniplex, Sony Music, and PlayStation Productions together announce an anime adaptation of the Ghost of Tsushima: Legends game, set to exclusively premiere on Crunchyroll in 2027.

The anime will be produced in collaboration with Aniplex, the studio behind series like Sword Art Online, Solo Leveling, and Demon Slayer.

The adaptation will be helmed by director Takanobu Mizuno at Kamikaze Douga. He is best known for directing the Star Wars: Visions episode 1, The Duel. He has also worked as the animation director for Batman Ninja. As for the studio, it has previously produced projects like Sand Land and Batman Ninja and is currently producing the Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League movie.

Joining Takanobu Mizuno will be Gen Urobuchi, who is credited with the series composition. Gen Urobuchi is the original creator of several series, including Fate/Zero, Psycho-Pass, Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, and others. This team will bring Ghost of Tsushima: Legends’ traditional samurai aesthetics to life with cinematic storytelling and striking visuals.

Sony Music will serve as the strategic music and soundtrack partner for the series. More details, including the creative team and cast, will be revealed in the future.

“The Ghost of Tsushima anime will offer fans an exciting new way to experience the game in an anime style that will be bold and groundbreaking,” said Rahul Purini, President of Crunchyroll.

As per Rahul Purini, the project is a testament to the creative synergy within the Sony family. This is because it unites the expertise of PlayStation Studios and PlayStation Productions; the creative team of Sucker Punch Productions and Aniplex; Sony Music’s iconic global artist roster; and Crunchyroll’s fan-first global marketing and distribution footprint.

“Having already proven the immense quality and versatility of our gaming properties across multiple successful film and television projects, we couldn’t be more excited to announce our first ever anime adaptation,” said Asad Qizilbash, Head of PlayStation Productions.

According to Asad Qizilbash, Aniplex is the perfect partner to translate Sucker Punch Productions’ hit video game into a new anime series.

The game's rich, immersive world based on Japanese mythology provided the perfect canvas for this project.
