The new Hatsune Miku anime film is based on the Project Sekai: Colorful Stage feat. Hatsune Miku smartphone game, which was first released in Japan on September 30, 2020. As previously revealed alongside the film’s initial announcement, it’s set to open in Japanese theaters on Friday, January 17, 2025. The film is confirmed for a global release, but this international release information is unavailable in any capacity as of this article’s writing.

New Hatsune Miku anime film features large cast in newest teaser trailer

The latest trailer for the new Hatsune Miku anime film first focuses on several performing groups and how Miku interacts with each of them. People who are clearly generally struggling in life also appear before a focus is given to Miku briefly. This is then interspersed with a focus on both Miku and the various real-world people who appear in the trailer. It ends with one of the girls calling out for Miku, who is unresponsive and seemingly lost somewhere in the digital world.

Fans can expect to learn more about the film’s plot in the next trailer/news release, which will also likely reveal additional new cast for the project. Most roles will be reprised by returning members from the franchise, with Saki Fujita returning as Hatsune Miku. Other new cast members include Ruriko Noguchi starring in the film as Ichika Hoshino, who seems set to be one of the film’s main characters alongside Miku herself.

Hiroyuki Hata is directing the Hatsune Miku anime film at P.A. Works, with Yoko Yonaiyama writing the screenplay. Yuki Akiyama is designing the characters and serving as chief animation director, as is Masatoshi Tsuji who is also a sub-character designer for the project. Finally, Satoshi Hono is composing the music for the film. COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing is being produced in collaboration with Colorful Palette and Sega.

The new Hatsune Miku anime film follows Ichika Hoshino, who hears a Miku song she has never heard before while at a CD shop. She also sees a version of Miku who she’s never seen before while at the shop, calling out to the digital girl. However, she’s surprised by the voice and disappears after making eye contact with Ichika.

Miku later appears on Ichika’s smartphone to explain that she wants to reach others with her songs but is unable to no matter how much she sings. Thus, she asks Ichika for help after witnessing Ichika do exactly that with a live street performance, setting the stage for COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing’s events.
