Wednesday, July 24, 2024, saw author and illustrator Yoshihiro Togashi confirm via his personal X (formerly Twitter) account that Hunter x Hunter chapter 402 & chapter 403 have been officially completed. These are most notably the first issues he has completed in well over a year for the series, with chapter 401’s completion being confirmed in March 2023.
It is also confirmed that Togashi is working on more manga chapters to be released following the completion of Hunter x Hunter chapter 402 and chapter 403. This news also comes just days after the manga’s 38th volume was confirmed to be released in September 2024, nearly two years after the release of the manga’s 37th compilation volume.
Hunter x Hunter chapter 402 & 403 completion suggests series could be returning soon
One of the most encouraging aspects of Hunter x Hunter chapter 402 & chapter 403’s completion is that it suggests the manga could soon return to serialization. When Togashi last completed 10 chapters, Shueisha released them on a weekly basis quickly after Togashi’s announcement via X that the tenth and final chapter had been completed.
While fans are still several chapters away from Togashi hitting a similar mark, his recent updates following this initial confirmation of 402 and 403’s completions are very encouraging. Roughly 15 hours later, Togashi shared that he was on page 8 of the manuscript for chapter 404. Shortly after, he shared a sketch of Chimera Ant arc antagonist Meruem while at his workstation.
With Togashi seemingly feeling healthy enough to make significant progress in creating new chapters, fans may be much closer to the series’ Weekly Shonen Jump return than they realize. However, with the health problems Togashi has been known to have, it’s equally as likely that sudden and unexpected flare-ups of back pain could hinder this exceptional progress.
Togashi’s health problems center around debilitating back pain, which was so severe at one point that the mangaka couldn’t even sit in a chair for two years. Togashi has also personally shared that the pain was so bad that doing something as simple as going to the bathroom became a major issue for him. While fans are obviously eager for Hunter x Hunter chapter 402 & 403, Togashi clearly needs to prioritize his health above all else.
Togashi’s Hunter x Hunter manga began serializing in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in March 1998. As of July 2022, the series had over 84 million copies in circulation, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time. Togashi is also known for his Yu Yu Hakusho manga series, which first began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in December 1990 and ran until its end in July 1994.
