Thursday, October 31, 2024, saw Hunter x Hunter mangaka Yoshihiro Togashi post another update on his progress on the series and share a new illustration. The artwork, which is a continuation of the Gon and Killua sketch shared earlier in the month, features the series’ original cast from its inaugural saga, the Hunter Exam Arc.

While not everyone from Hunter x Hunter’s first narrative stretch is present in the artwork, it features the five central-most characters and some beloved supporting cast. However, given that this sketch itself appears to be a continuation of previous artwork, it’s possible that the entire cast from this arc could be present before long.

Hunter x Hunter mangaka’s latest artwork features some of the most beloved characters from first story arc

As mentioned, not every character from Hunter x Hunter’s first arc is in the sketch as it currently exists, but it does feature all of the major players. This includes the series’ centralmost group of Gon Freecss, Killua Zoldyck, Leorio Paradinight, and Kurapika. The arc’s primary antagonists are also represented in Hisoka Morow, Illumi Zoldyck, and Tonpa. Finally, supporting characters Satotz and Hanzo are also present.

Togashi also excitingly gives an update on his current progress, seeing him in the middle of drawing pages 5 and 6 of an unknown manga chapter. However, based on his most recent updates, it’s likely a chapter somewhere in the mid-to-high 420s. Earlier in October 2024, Togashi had confirmed all work required by him through chapter 422 had been completed. His assistants will complete whatever else needs to be done prior to publication.

This estimate of Togashi’s progress being for mid-to-high 420s chapters also coincides with his earlier stated goal of completing his work through chapter 430 by the year’s end. Certainly, the mangaka is in a great place to do so considering the progress he’s made so far and how much time is left in the year. However, while Togashi’s mind is willing, his body being able is a concern.

Togashi’s primary health issues in the past have centered around his back and its general ability to function. This even applies to his daily life, with Togashi having shared many times prior how debilitating the pain can be. Fans have been incredibly supportive of Togashi’s hiatuses and health over the years, content to see the series left unfinished if it spares Togashi unnecessary pain and discomfort.

Togashi’s manga began serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump manga magazine in March 1998, where it is still serialized today. However, the series has essentially moved to an at-will, irregular publication schedule, given Togashi’s health. The series has undergone several hiatuses throughout its run, some lasting as long as multiple years.
