Thursday, September 5, 2024 saw the latest sales numbers for the 38th and latest compilation volume of Yoshihiro Togashi’s original Hunter x Hunter manga be revealed. While the volume’s release on Wednesday, September 4, means that only one day's worth of sales are available, the manga did claim the day’s number 1 spot, according to the Shoseki manga rankings.
This news regarding Hunter x Hunter volume 38’s success is particularly exciting as a herald of good things to come for the manga’s return to Weekly Shonen Jump on Monday, October 7, 2024. Likewise, with their clearly being a heavy focus on the series heading into its return, fans can expect fall to be Togashi’s season with the manga’s return in full force.
Hunter x Hunter manga’s commercial success heading into weekly return shows how relevant Togashi’s series is
Unfortunately, the official Shoseki Ranking blog website doesn’t include the actual sales numbers for Hunter x Hunter volume 38, or any series for that matter. However, it does index the top 500 comic sales, which cover a wide variety of genre, demographic, format, and more. This helps to further emphasize volume 38’s achievement as an impressive one, even if exact numbers can’t be used to quantify exactly how impressive the feat is.
The Shoseki website also posts weekly and monthly manga sales rankings in addition to daily ones, which means fans can track volume 38’s success as time goes on. However, it’s unlikely that volume 38 will slow its commercial role anytime soon, as it marks the first compilation volume released for the series since volume 37 in November 2022.
Volume 38 compiles the chapters from the manga’s previous return from hiatus, which coincidentally also began in late October 2022. The manga released chapters 391-400 from October 24 through December 26, 2022 in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. These chapters mainly dealt with the formative origins of the Phantom Troupe association, showing how a murder of one of their own brought the group closer than ever before.
However, focus returned to the ongoing Succession Contest arc by the time of chapter 398’s release. Likewise, it’s expected that this next string of chapters set to begin on October 4 will also primarily focus on the Succession Contest arc. It’s unclear, as of this article’s writing, exactly how many chapters fans will get in this latest return, but it’s safe to assume chapters 401 to 410 will be released at the very least.
Yoshihiro Togashi began his Hunter x Hunter manga series in March 1998, having run in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine for the entirety of its publication thus far. The manga was adapted into two different television anime series, with the 2011 rendition being the more widely-known and praised one.
