Sunday, November 10, 2024 saw X (formerly Twitter) account and reputable Jujutsu Kaisen franchise news source @Go_Jover (Myamura) share a new illustration from mangaka Gege Akutami. The illustration features the series’ main cast from season 1, which includes all of the Tokyo Jujutsu High alumni and teachers save for Masamichi Yaga.
The new artwork features each of the Jujutsu Kaisen main cast in a new, wintry outfit, many of which are complete with various styles of scarves and other coverings. The source of the artwork is unclear as of this article’s writing but is most likely from the latest issue of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine given the timing of Myamura’s post.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s Tokyo high students and teachers get all dressed up for the Winter season in new artwork
The latest Jujutsu Kaisen artwork features characters Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushiguro, Nobara Kugisaki, Maki Zen’in, Toge Inumaki, Panda, Kento Nanami, and Satoru Gojo. Notably, these are all the students and teachers at Tokyo Jujutsu High, which is the main setting of the anime and manga series throughout its earliest stages. However, notably absent is Tokyo principal Masamichi Yaga.
Each character is also dressed in a traditional kimono, save for Panda who is just wearing a gray scarf while holding some objects in his hands. Everyone else is in some sort of traditional kimono garb with a matching scarf or similar covering. For example, Maki’s seems to just be a general extra layer on top of her kimono, whereas Nobara’s is a much more regal, fur stole rather than a plain old scarf.
There also seem to be some references to the series within the artwork, with the most notable being Nobara holding a disposable camera. This is seemingly a reference to the fourth ending sequence of the series. This saw Nobara, Megumi, and Yuji (who are also all in a row in the latest artwork) walking around Tokyo while taking pictures of themselves and the scenery on a disposable camera.
While many are speculating what Akutami’s excessive artwork publications since the manga’s conclusion could be signifying, it’s unlikely that there is any significance. Generally speaking, mangaka of series as culturally significant as Akutami’s will continue publishing new artwork for years after the conclusion. Likewise, there’s no reason to assume that Akutami’s series is building towards any major announcement or reveal given currently available information.
Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen manga series began serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in March 2018. The manga ran until September 2024 for a total of 271 chapters, which will be compiled into 28 volumes. MAPPA Studios produces a television anime adaptation of the series, which aired its first season in 2020 and its second in 2023. A third season is currently in production, but no significant information beyond its status is known.
