On Tuesday, November 26, 2024, Oricon’s Yearly Comic Sales Ranking for 2024 was released, confirming Jujutsu Kaisen and One Piece’s first and second-place spots. These numbers are representative of total volumes sold for a series during the year, with Gege Akutami’s manga beating out Eiichiro Oda’s by roughly 2.4 million copies sold.
This victory for Jujutsu Kaisen is especially significant for its victory over One Piece, which was undoubtedly fueled by the climactic Shinjuku Showdown Arc released last year. However, Oda’s series does get the edge in one particular way over Akutami’s, winning a small battle despite losing the war for first place overall.
Jujutsu Kaisen wins the war against One Piece but loses a battle in individual volume sales
As mentioned above, Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen manga surpassed Oda’s flagship One Piece series for total manga sales in 2024. Akutami’s series sold 7,610,995 copies in Japan for the 2024 year, while Oda’s sold 5,250,210. Among the top five is Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, with 4,988,170 copies sold; The Apothecary Diaries, with 4,723,562 copies sold; and Blue Lock, with 3,881,269 copies sold.
In sixth place is Kaiju No. 8 with 3,398,326 copies sold, followed by Kingdom with 3,234,204 copies, Haikyu!! with 3,077,085 copies, My Hero Academia with 2,943,985 copies, and Spy x Family with 2,662,408 copies. As mentioned above, these sales numbers reflect volumes sold in Japan only, which is typical for any Oricon figures.
While Akutami’s series sold the most copies overall in 2024, Oda’s series did top it in individual volume sales rankings for 2024. Volume 108 of Oda’s manga took first place in this category with 1,552,215 copies sold, and volume 25 of Akutami’s series in second with 1,542,345 copies sold.
Third place goes back to Oda, with volume 109’s 1,467,881 copies sold, and Akutami’s series, then taking fourth and fifth with volumes 26 and 27, respectively. These two volumes sold 1,416,480 copies and 1,191,959 copies, respectively. Sixth place goes back to Oda’s series with volume 110, selling 1,056,181 copies. Akutami’s series appears number eight in the top ten, with volume 28’s 982,900 copies sold.
Akutami's manga recently concluded with 271 chapters overall after six years of serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. Akutami’s manga began serialization in March 2018 and ended in September 2024. Oda’s manga began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in July 1997 and is still ongoing today but progressing through its final saga. The series’ anime is currently on a six-month hiatus, returning in April 2025.
