Thursday, November 21, 2024, saw the official website for the Kaiju No. 8 anime film compilation project reveal its Friday, March 28, 2025, Japanese release date. The film was also announced as screening for three weeks only in Japan, meaning it will leave the 32 Japanese theaters it’s hitting on Friday, April 18, 2025.
Alongside the news came a key visual for the Kaiju No. 8 anime film project primarily focused on the season 1 recap portion of the film and also representing the Hoshina’s Day Off episode. The new, original episode is screening in theaters as a part of the larger film project, which will precede the second anime television season’s general 2025 release.
Kaiju No. 8 anime film project reveals the beast within in new key visual
The Kaiju No. 8 anime film project’s key visual primarily focuses on protagonist Kafka Hibino. The visual is likewise a layered image, with the base layer being Kafka himself in his human form bathed in a blue light. Overlaid on top of this image with clawmark-like holes revealing Kafka underneath is an image of Kafka in his transformed state. This image is bathed in a red light, giving an exciting and attractive contrast to the visual.
The visual features plenty of text describing the release date, credits, and what the film project will cover. The bottom left corner features a miniature visual for the Hoshina’s Day Off brand new original episode, which will be screened as a part of the film project. The visual seems to feature Reno Ichikawa and Iharu Furuhashi on a motorcycle, while a larger image of Soshiro Hoshina appears behind them with a smirk on his face and his back to the pair.
The new episode will have multiple staff members from the anime’s first season returning for its production. This includes Yuto Tsukuda credited as the writer for the new episode’s original story, and Yuichiro Kido as the scriptwriter. The story follows Reno on a day off, who follows Hoshina along with Iharu after sensing something unusual with their commanding officer, who is also on his day off.
While the Kaiju No. 8 anime film project now has an official March 2025 release date, the second season of the mainline television series still only has a general 2025 release window. However, it’s worth noting that the compilation film will be screening in Japan during the opening weeks of the Spring 2025 anime season. Given its status as a season 1 recap production, it’s likely that season 2 will premiere in Summer 2025 at the earliest.
Mangaka Naoya Matsumoto’s original Kaiju No. 8 series began serialization in July 2020 on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ digital publication platform. The first season of the television anime aired in the Spring 2024 anime season. The franchise also has a spinoff manga and an upcoming game that will be playable on mobile and PC.
