Saturday, June 29, 2024, saw Kaiju No. 8 season 2 officially announced as being in production immediately following the airing of the first season’s 12th and final episode on the same day. The second season was confirmed as in production via a roughly 15-second-long promotional video, which was uploaded to TOHO Animation’s official YouTube channel.

It was also announced in the promotional video that Kaiju No. 8 season 2 would see voice actor Koki Uchiyama join the cast in the role of First Division Captain Gen Narumi. Uchiyama’s voice as Narumi can be heard in the promotional video, ordering the First Division to move out after the earlier stages of the trailer see a Kaiju alert blare out.

Kaiju No. 8 season 2 officially confirmed as in production, but reveals no release info

While the confirmation of Kaiju No. 8 season 2 and the casting of Gen Narumi is incredibly exciting, unfortunately, the announcement did not reveal or tease any release window for the sequel. This is somewhat unfortunate, as many fans were hoping to see the series either begin a second, continuous cour or announce a same-year return for the Fall 2024 anime season.

Likewise, with the lack of these developments in mind, it suggests that the sequel will be released sometime in 2025. A Spring or Summer 2025 release date is likely, as either would give roughly a full year’s worth of production time to staff, assuming production on the sequel has already begun before today’s announcement.

However, this is all speculative as of this article’s writing, with no information regarding a release window or release date confirmed. That being said, the above window does seem likely given the timing of the announcement, the confirmation of Narumi’s casting, and the presence of Uchiyama in the role of Narumi for the PV.

Likewise, fans can expect additional cast and staff for the sequel season to be announced over the next few months. It’s unexpected that any major staff changes are made as of this article’s writing, but something that could prompt this is a change in the animation studio, likewise necessitating staff changes. It’s also expected that the season 1 cast will return in full force for the sequel anime.

Kaiju No. 8 season 2 will serve as the continuation of the television anime adaptation of author and illustrator Naoya Matsumoto’s original manga series of the same name. Matsumoto’s manga first began serialization on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ digital publication platform in July 2020, where it’s still regularly serialized today.

The series is set in a world where monsters named Kaiju regularly cause disasters, with Japan having the highest rate of Kaiju attacks and subsequently establishing the Kaiju Defense Force. The story follows Kafka Hibino, a 32-year-old who is trying to enter the Kaiju Defense Force to honor a promise he made to his childhood friend and Defense Force Third Division Captain, Mina Ashiro.
