MAPPA's The Rose of Versailles anime movie announces 2025 premiere and more with teaser PV and visual

On Tuesday, July 2, 2024, the official website and X handle for MAPPA's new The Rose of Versailles anime movie shared a teaser promotional video and a visual to announce that the film will premiere in early 2025. Additionally, the movie's main cast and staff members have been unveiled.

The Rose of Versailles anime movie is an adaptation of the eponymous historical manga series written and illustrated by Riyoko Ikeda. The manga was originally serialized in Margaret magazine from 1972 to 1973 before it was given a rerun from 2013 to 2018. Notably, the movie adaptation by MAPPA was green-lit in September 2022 with a visual and announcement promo.

The official staff for the new The Rose of Versailles anime movie streamed the second promotional video on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, to announce that the film will open in early 2025 in Japanese theatres.

The short clip features Marie Antoinette, Oscar Francois de Jarjayes, and other characters integral to the movie's plot. Aside from teasing the interesting plot points, the PV previews the character voices of the new cast members.

The film stars Aya Hirano as Marie Antoinette, Toshiyuki Toyonaga as Andre Grandier, Miyuki Sawashiro as Oscar Francois de Jarjayes, and Kazuki Kato as Hans Axel von Fersen. More cast members will likely be announced in the future.

On the anime's official X handle and website, the voice actors have expressed their delight at being part of the beloved franchise.

Along with the promotional video, the staff unveiled a new key visual, which shows Oscar Francois de Jarjayes and Marie Antoinette facing the same direction.

Besides them, the visual features Andre Grandier and Hans Axel von Fersen in the background. Interestingly, the illustration has a tagline in Japanese, which reads as the following when translated to English:

"Nobly and wholeheartedly, they loved..."

Staff and the plot for The Rose of Versailles anime movie

Ai Yoshimura has been enlisted as the director for The Rose of Versailles anime movie at MAPPA Studios. Yoshimura-san has previously worked in My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU and Daily Lives of High School Boys.

Tomoko Komparu is in charge of the series scripts, while Mariko Oka is the character designer. Hiroyuki Sawano, known for his contributions to Blue Exorcist and Attack on Titan, is enlisted as the music producer. He's also the composer, along with Kohta Yamamoto.

Based on Ikeda's manga, The Rose of Versailles movie is set during the French Revolution. The film centers around a unique tale of the life and romance of Oscar Francoise de Jarjayes, a woman who dresses as a man, and Marie Antoinette, an innocent & childish queen who came to France from Australia.
