Wednesday, August 6, 2024 saw My Hero Academia fans absolutely stunned as the Deadpool manga, known as Deadpool: Samurai officially, returned with a Dabi’s Dance reference. The manga’s return came in the guise of the premiere of author Sanshiro Kasama and illustrator Hikaru Useugi’s Secret Steward manga on Thursday, August 7, 2024 at 12 a.m. in Japan.
While the manga starts out as the advertised romantic comedy storyline centering on a trainee butler and his mistress, it’s true nature, as the Deadpool manga is quickly and shockingly made apparent.
This reveal is completed with a Fourth Wall break typical of the character, which is where the My Hero Academia reference to Dabi’s Dance is clearly and obviously made.
Secret Steward manga is seemingly new Deadpool manga, and My Hero Academia fans love the reveal
As mentioned above, Kasama and Useugi’s Secret Steward manga was originally billed as a brand new series from the pair, who had also worked on the original Deadpool manga together.
While the premiere chapter’s first act followed the advertised storyline as described above, the butler character of Yu Omori is quickly run over in a truck driven by none other than the Merc with a Mouth.
After parking the truck, Deadpool exits and looks and speaks directly to the audience in a Fourth Wall break, announcing he’s “back on the Viz app” and asking readers if they had missed him.
The issue continues with Yu and Deadpool’s battle after the former is revealed to be some type of man-eating shapeshifting insect. The final panel confirms the manga’s true nature as Deadpool: Samurai’s “2nd season.”
The original Deadpool manga originally began as a one-shot, part of a collaboration between Shueisha and Marvel Comics. The pair’s one-shot was then picked up into a short series that ran from December 2020 to June 2021.
Viz Media released both volumes in English in 2022 as a part of its collaboration with Marvel Comics to publish manga and comics based on the franchise’s characters.
Understandably, though, My Hero Academia fans are much more concerned with the Dabi’s Dance reference. Dabi’s Dance is one of the most infamous moments in the series, seeing the character quite literally dance with glee as he reveals his true identity of Toya Todoroki to the world.
The villain takes glee in this because of how it torments his father Endeavor, who is the Number 1 Pro Hero in Japan in-series at the time of this reveal. However, most My Hero Academia fans are instead focusing on the various implications stemming from the reference, as it relates to the original manga series:
“The fact that mha is canon in that universe too makes it even funnier bc the dude is actively referencing someone who committed arson LFMOAOA,” posted one netizen.
“And the fact that Deadpool and all might canonically teamed up in the deadpool manga…love him,” pointed out another.
“Toya, the icon that you are,” reveled a third.
It’s clear that the fanbase of Kohei Horikoshi’s recently concluded manga series is finding significant joy in Deadpool’s very own manga continuing to reference the series.
Likewise, if this first chapter of the continuation is anything to go on, there are likely many more to come in the series’ near future.
