In Japan, My Hero Academia: You’re Next is set to open in theaters this coming Friday, August 2, 2024, screening simultaneously in IMAX, MX4D, 4DX, and Dolby Cinema on launch day. TOHO International, who released the subtitled trailer, will bring the film to the United States theaters come October 11. The film will be available in both the original Japanese audio with English subtitles, as well as an English dubbed version.

The film is the fourth in the franchise overall, with the first three being Two Heroes, Heroes Rising, and World Heroes’ Mission in chronological order. Two Heroes opened in Japanese theaters in July 2018, with Heroes Rising opening in Japan in December 2019. World Heroes’ Mission opened in Japan in August 2021 and was released in the United States in October 2021, going on to gross 10 million USD stateside.

Original manga creator, author, and illustrator Kohei Horikoshi serves as My Hero Academia: You’re Next’s general supervisor and original character designer. The film will have an original story set roughly around where the television anime adaptation is currently, with safe society having collapsed. It starts with a mysterious giant fortress appearing, as well as a man who resembles the former Symbol of Peace, All Might.

The original villain characters for the film are said to be members of a mysterious and large criminal organization known as the Gorrini Family. Tensai Okamura is directing the film at BONES studios, which also animates the television anime. Returning staff members from the television anime and previous films include scriptwriter Yosuke Kuroda, character designer Yoshihiko Umakoshi, and composer Yuki Hayashi.

Horikoshi’s original manga series first began serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in July 2014. The manga has been serialized there since its inception and is currently progressing through its epilogue, with the 430th and final chapter set to be released on Monday, August 5, 2024. The television anime adaptation began in April 2016 and is currently progressing through its seventh and potentially last television season.
