Friday, August 9, 2024, saw Netflix begin listing the Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM anime film for a Sunday, September 1, 2024, premiere on the streaming service in the United States. The film, which originally hit Japanese theaters in January 2024, has been available to stream in Japan on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video since early June 2024.

The Gundam Seed FREEDOM anime film was originally screened in the United States and Canada by Bandai Namco Filmworks and Fathom Events on May 7 and 8, 2024.

May 7 saw the film screened in its original Japanese dub with English subtitles, while May 8 saw the film screened in an English dubbed version.

In Japan, the Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM anime film debuted at #1 at the box office, selling 634,182 tickets for 1,065,983,130 yen in its first three days of being in theaters. That roughly equates to $7.2 million. It marked the Gundam franchise’s highest three-day opening in box office earnings ever.

The film eventually went on to become the highest-earning Gundam franchise anime film in Japan ever. As of May 21, 2024, the film had earned a cumulative total of 4,796,455,740 yen, which roughly equates to $30.65 million. The film ended its Japanese theatrical run just a few days later, on May 23.

The film featured an expansive cast including returning and new members, with notable talents like Jun Fukuyama, Junichi Suwabe, Ayane Sakura, Tomokazu Seki, Takehityo Koyasu, and more, all having roles.

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed director Mitsuo Fukuda returned to direct the film at Bandai Namco Filmworks. Fukuda also co-wrote the script with his late wife, Chiaki Morosawa, and Liu Goto. Hisashi Hirai designed the characters. Additional staff included:

The Gundam Seed FREEDOM anime film is a part of the Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Project ignited initiative, which was announced in 2021.

It commemorates the 20th anniversary of the original Mobile Suit Gundam Seed anime in 2022 and is composed of several parts. Two such parts include a new Mobile Suit Gundam Seed game and the Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Eclipse side-story manga series. The film is a sequel to the Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny television anime series.
