The series is generally regarded as a faithful adaptation of Haro Aso’s original manga series despite some changes existing. Aso’s original manga series of the same name follows Ryohei Arisu, which is pronounced the same as “Alice” in Japanese. Arisu is a high school student irritated with his intolerable daily life. One night when out with friends Karube and Chota, the town is suddenly covered in giant fireworks.
Upon waking, he sees no one else around aside from his two friends. They soon learn that they’re in a different world than their own, forced to participate in survival games or choose to die immediately. All three decide to play the games in an effort to live and return to their own world, with the series chronicling their efforts and what they learn along the way.
Aslo’s original manga was serialized in Shogakukan’s Shonen Sunday S from November 2010 to March 2015. It then switched to Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday, running there from April 2015 until its end in March 2016. The manga was collected into 18 compilation volumes, all of which are translated into English.
