Wednesday, September 18, 2024, saw Netflix unintentionally announce the castings for One Piece Live Action season 2 characters Sir Crocodile and Nico Robin via their official website. In a post summating currently available information for the second season, it was revealed that Lera Abova will be playing Nico Robin, and Joe Manganiello will be playing Sir Crocodile.
This unintended casting news from Netflix comes hours after One Piece Live Action season 2’s Geeked Week contribution, which was a behind-the-scenes video hosted by Jeff Ward (Buggy the Clown). Likewise, it was totally unexpected that any other news would be revealed for the series today. As of this article’s writing, Netflix has yet to comment on these unintentional casting reveals in any capacity.
One Piece Live Action season 2’s most anticipated castings unintentionally announced by Netflix
As mentioned above, currently available information suggests that Netflix didn’t intend to announce these One Piece Live Action season 2 castings today. Supporting this is the fact that there are no official embeds put out by any official Netflix social media accounts announcing the castings. The information was seemingly unintentionally put out via the official Netflix website, specifically through an article titled “One Piece Season 2: What We Know So Far.”
While the post has since been edited, screenshots of a graphic showing the castings and the original article subtitle specifically mentioning the pair by name exist to confirm the news. The pair was also originally listed alongside several other newly announced season 2 cast members. This includes Charithra Chandran as Nefertari Vivi/Miss Wednesday, Sendhil Ramamurthy as Nefertari Cobra, Katey Sagal as Dr. Kureha, and more.
Likewise, with Chandran and Ramamurthy’s castings being highly controversial in the series’ fandom, Robin and Crocodile’s castings were very highly anticipated by fans. While the news is recent enough that there isn’t much reaction from the fandom, those sharing their thoughts seem relatively happy with both. However, Manganiello’s casting as Crocodile is undoubtedly more popular amongst fans based on currently available reactions.
Robin’s casting is a bit trickier, as the initial casting call saw production staff seeking out a Hispanic or Latino actress for the role. While some fans praised this decision due to it being more accurate to her Alabasta look, others critiqued it due to original manga creator Eiichiro Oda’s comments that Robin would be of Russian nationality. Likewise, while Robin’s casting will certainly be more controversial, it’s expected that most fans will be pleased with the decision.
One Piece Live Action season 2 will serve as the continuation of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Oda’s original manga series. The first season premiered in August 2023 and was renewed for a second less than two weeks later, making it one of the fastest renewals in the platform’s history.
