A New Cat's Eye anime has officially been confirmed for production. This was announced during the Disney APAC Content Showcase 2024 event in Singapore on Thursday, November 21, 2024. According to the announcement, the new anime will be released exclusively on Disney+ in 2025. The official staff has also streamed a teaser PV and visual for the upcoming anime.
The new Cat's Eye anime serves as an adaptation of Tsukasa Hojo's classic manga series of the same name. Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump serialized the manga from 1981 to 1985 and published 18 tankobon volumes.
Previously, the manga inspired a TV anime series produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, which aired 36 episodes, from July 1983 to March 1984. It was followed by a second series, which aired 37 episodes from October 1984 to July 1985.
New Cat's Eye anime is set to premiere in 2025
The Disney APAC Content Showcase 2024 was held at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore on Thursday, November 21, 2024. During the event, the official staff announced that a new Cat's Eye anime is in the works and it will be released in 2025, exclusively on the Disney+ platform. However, the staff didn't reveal whether the new anime will be a series or a movie.
Along with this announcement, the staff shared a teaser promotional video and visual. The short clip features iconic visuals from the series in a modern art style, accompanied by Ado's cover of Anri's Cat's Eye, the opening theme song for the 1983 TV series.
The official X account for Disney+ JP (@DisneyPlusJP) has shared a comment from Ado. The Japanese singer mentions that she paid her respects to Anri and mixed the original 80s song with her own touch. She's honored to be involved in the song of such a legendary work.
On the other hand, the teaser visual for the new Cat's Eye anime depicts the Kisugi sisters, Hitomi, Rui, and Ai, posing under the moonlight. The visual confirms the anime's 2025 release and its digital distribution on Disney+. Notably, the Disney+ JP has also shared a comment from the original author, Tsukasa Hojo, on X.
The author is enthralled to hear the news of the new Cat's Eye anime, and acknowledged that it was his debut series as a mangaka. Tsukasa Hojo added that he recently received offers from overseas to use the work.
That's how he realized there are people who still care about the work. Moreover, he was surprised when he heard that the manga would be made into a new anime. Although he's slightly worried about how the younger generation will perceive the series, he hopes they enjoy it.
The new Cat's Eye anime will likely follow the original narrative from the manga, which is a romance comedy about three sisters, Rui, Hitomi, and Ai. They run a cafe during the day and act as phantom thieves called the Cat's Eye at night.
