An Uzumaki anime is in the works, according to author Junji Ito during his interview with the Japan Times website, published on June 29, 2024, while also revealing that the first episode is "complete" and is going to live up to people's expectations. It was also confirmed that the anime is due to come out in 2024, although the mangaka didn't give a specific release date in that interview.
The release of the Uzumaki anime, which is made by studio Drive, is also very likely to prop Junji Ito's profile, even though he is widely regarded as the master of horror in the manga medium. It is also worth pointing out there isn't a lot of information surrounding the project beyond a trailer on YouTube, and Ito's recent comments regarding the anime in the aforementioned interview.

The Uzumaki anime has first episode completed and is coming out this year, according to author Junji Ito
Legendary manga author Junji Ito has recently done an interview with the Japan Times website, revealing that this anime already has the first episode completed and that, according to his vision, lives up to the fans' expectations. However, while he did reveal that this production is due to come out in 2024, he didn't give a specific release as of yet.
This project has been running for a couple of years now and it was reported that the COVID pandemic delayed production, so Ito revealing that is ready to come out in 2024 is positive news. Furthermore, when considering the unique feel of this author's works, his words regarding the quality of this adaptation by Studio Drive are certainly encouraging.
The legacy of Junji Ito
The Uzumaki anime is going to be a great opportunity to celebrate not only one of the greatest horror manga stories in the medium, but also the career and achievements of author Junji Ito.
Widely regarded as the master of the horror genre, his series of short stories and manga have cemented his place as one of the most influential figures in the medium, to the point that said influence has gone beyond just this art form.
Part of the author's appeal has been his constant search for both the eerie and the horrific, which has been a constant in his career since he first started publishing in the 80s. This is something he has shown even in the recent interview with the Japan Times:
“I believe that the human body, with its complex and incomprehensible mind, forms the basis of all horror. Anxiety is an emotion all animals feel, but the anxiety felt by humans, with our highly evolved brains, is unfathomable. The human body is a symbol of that bottomlessness," he said.
