Tuesday, June 25, 2024 saw a new official X (formerly Twitter) account open and announce that a new Ranma ½ anime series is in production adapting the original manga of the same name. Alongside the announcement, a roughly 60-second promotional video was released, primarily showing several manga scenes from the original series set to some music in its second half. No dialogue of any kind was added into the promotional video.

The first half of the promotional video for the new Ranma ½ anime focuses on the various works of original series creator, author and illustrator Rumiko Takahashi. This includes Inuyasha, Rin-ne, the currently ongoing Mao, and Urusei Yatsura, which also received a new anime adaptation in the last few years which recently concluded.

New Ranma ½ anime adaptation set to release new info on July 17

According to currently available information, the new Ranma ½ anime is set to announce additional information regarding its production on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at 6 p.m. Japanese Standard Time.

It’s unclear yet what kind of info will be announced, but fans can expect something significant relative to the series’ production. Basic info like a release window and animation studio are the most likely to be shared.

Likewise, fans can expect the anime to be a ways away from premiering considering the info in this announcement. While purely speculative, the most likely release window for the series is mid-2025 assuming production has only just recently begun.

Nevertheless, it’s entirely likely that the series has been in production for quite some time and could premiere in late 2024 or early 2025. However, it seems unlikely considering the full context and available info.

The new Ranma ½ anime will serve as a complete readaptation of Takahashi’s original manga rather than a sequel to the April 1989 anime of the same name. The series ran until September 1992 under various names as it progressed through its story.

The anime franchise also inspired two movies, a theatrical anime and multiple OVAs, with the final of these OVA episodes shipping in January 1996.

The franchise then returned in September 2008 with the Ranma ½: Nightmare! Incense of Spring Sleep special anime series.

The series also inspired a live-action television special in December 2011. Viz Media released the anime on VHS, DVD and Blu-ray Disc, and has also published the series’ manga in English.

Takahashi’s original manga series first began serialization in August 1987 in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine, where it ran regularly until March 1996.

The series ran for 407 chapters total, which were collected into 38 compilation volumes. In both a 1993 and 2014 English release, the series has been translated into English in its entirety.
