On Wednesday, July 17, 2024, a "Grand Announcement" livestream was held for the new Ranma ½ anime by the official staff on X, where it was revealed that the show would premiere on October 5, 2024. Along with the announcement, the staff revealed the first trailer, a key visual, and details regarding the anime's main cast.
It was previously announced that a new Ranma ½ anime was in production. According to the latest announcement, the remake series is being produced by MAPPA. The original series (produced by Studio DEEN) aired from 1989 to 1992 for 161 episodes. The series serves as an adaptation of the manga series, written and illustrated by Rumiko Takahashi.
New Ranma ½ anime confirms October 5, 2024, release date with first trailer
As mentioned earlier, the official X account (@ranma_pr) held a live stream titled Grand Announcement on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, to stream the first trailer for the new Ranma ½ anime and announce that the series will be released on October 5, 2024.
Along with this announcement, the broadcast details have also been shared. The new Ranma ½ anime will air its episodes every Saturday, starting October 5, 2024, at 24:55 (effectively October 6, 2024, at 12:55 am JST) on the Nippon Television network in Japan. Besides that, the series will be exclusively available on Netflix immediately after the broadcast.
The first promotional video features beloved characters, including Ranma Saotome, Genma Saotome, Akane Tendo, Shampoo, Kasumi Tendo, and others, in upgraded animation quality by MAPPA. The short clip showcases the funny moments from the original series and previews the character voices.
Aside from the PV, the official staff unveiled a new visual for the new Ranma ½ anime. The illustration features Ranma's twin avatars, Akane, Genma, Ryouga, Shampoo, Tatewaki, Kasmu, and other important characters from the series.
Details regarding the cast members have also arrived. According to the live stream, the anime will feature the reprising cast members, with some changes in their roles. Kappei Yamaguchi returns as Ranma Saotome, while Megumi Hayashibara will play Ranma's female version.
Noriko Hidaka continues as Akane Tendo, while Takayama Minami reprises her role as Tendo Nabiki. Rei Sakuma returns as Shampoo, while Ogata Kenichi voices the narrator. Kikuto Inoue stars as Kasumi Tendo, while Koichi Yamadera plays Ryoga Hibiki's role.
Akio Otsuka replaces Ryusuke Obayashi as Soun Tendo in the series. Likewise, Genma Saotome's voice actor has been changed from Kenichi Ogata to Cho.
The anime's official staff on X and website shared the comments from Yamaguchi-san, Megumi-san, and Noriko-san, where they shared their excitement to be part of the franchise again.
Staff for the new Ranma ½ anime
Konosuke Uda, renowned for his contributions to One Piece, Days, and others, has been enlisted as the director for the new Ranma ½ anime at MAPPA Studios, with Kimiko Ueno as the series composer.
Hiromi Taniguchi has also joined the staff as the character designer. Additionally, it was revealed on the live stream that J-pop artist Ano will perform the martial arts anime's opening theme song.
A comment from the artist has arrived on the website, where she mentioned that she found the interactions between Ranma and Akane cute and straightforward. Ano added that she was honored to be in charge of the opening theme. The J-pop artist has created the theme song that fits the worldview of the series.
Based on Rumiko Takahashi's manga, the narrative for the martial arts anime will follow the story of Ranma Saotome, a high school martial artist, who turns from a man to a woman when splashed with water, as a consequence of a curse.
