Thursday, July 18, 2024, saw IMDB report One Piece as its top user-rated TV show of 2024 thus far, beating out House of the Dragon, Shogun, and many more notable series. This top spot was secured with an impressive 9.0 average rating for the series on the whole, an impressive feat for what’s also the oldest series on the list.
This latest feat from Toei Animation’s television anime adaptation of author and illustrator Eiichiro Oda’s original manga series highlights the success spawned from recent moves made by the franchise. This includes Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the series, as well as recent collaborative and promotional presences in countries like the United States, which helped further expose the series.
One Piece anime’s victory over House of the Dragon, Shogun, and more accentuates its quality, consistency in 2024
Making the anime’s victory more impressive is that the anime beat out six series that officially received Emmy nominations yesterday, Wednesday, July 17. These shows are Shogun, Fallout, The Bear, True Detective, X-Men ‘97, and The Gentlemen. The full list of top 10 rankings from highest to lowest is as follows:
- One Piece
- Shogun
- X-Men ‘97
- The Bear
- Fallout
- The Boys
- House of the Dragon
- True Detective
- One Day
- The Gentlemen
To qualify for IMDB’s Top-Rated Shows of 2024 list, a series must have had seasons premiere from January 1, 2024, through June 30, 2024. These series also needed to meet a minimum threshold of votes received within that time frame. The rankings are likewise subject to change by year’s end, but the anime’s dominance is at least solidified through the first half of 2024’s television offerings.
In addition to the anime’s incredible consistency and quality so far through 2024 (made even more impressive by its weekly airing status), recent promotional efforts must also be recognized. This includes Netflix’s aforementioned One Piece live action series, as well as collaborating with the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams in December 2023 and The Vegas Sphere in June 2024, and an upcoming collab with the MLB’s Boston Red Sox in August 2024.
These stateside promotions specifically deserve to be recognized as, while the series itself is extremely popular in the West, anime and manga aren’t as big in the U.S. specifically as in other Western worlds. Likewise, the exposure the series has generated to potential US audiences via this presence deserves specific recognition.
Oda’s original manga series first began serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in July 1997. Toei’s adaptation first began in October 1999 and is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The anime has also been announced for a remake from Wit Studio and Netflix, which is actively in production, but no further information on the series is available as of this article’s writing.
