Thursday, August 8, 2024, it was officially confirmed that the character Portgas D. Ace would appear in Netflix’s upcoming One Piece Live Action season 2 original series. The news comes from Ace’s anime voice actor Toshio Furukawa, who spoke with fans at the Otakuthon event and confirmed to them that he will do the voice acting for the character in the season’s Japanese dub.

This was initially reported online by those in attendance who spoke to Furukawa personally and was then corroborated by reputable franchise leakers such as @pewpiece on X (formerly Twitter). While the production staff of One Piece Live Action season 2 has not officially confirmed this, Furukawa’s words serve as more than enough proof that the season will feature the character.

One Piece Live Action season 2’s Ace secret seemingly spoiled by Furukawa’s Otakuthon comments

While Furukawa confirmed that he would be voicing Ace in One Piece Live Action season 2’s official Japanese dub, he offered no further comments on the character’s presence in the season. Likewise, it’s unconfirmed as of this article’s writing exactly who will play the fan-favorite and what his presence in the second season’s events will be like.

Although Ace played a significant role in the original anime and manga’s Alabasta arc, which the second season is expected to adapt fully, there’s always the chance that Netflix changes events. This was proven in the first season, which revealed Luffy’s relationship to Marine Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp much earlier in the story than author and illustrator Eiichiro Oda’s original source material did.

With this in mind, there’s no telling as of this article’s writing exactly what Ace’s role in the Netflix series will be relative to the original source material. While fans are hopeful that his role won’t be diminished at all relative to the anime and manga versions of the Alabasta arcs, there is always the chance that this does come to pass.

In any case, confirmation that Ace will be present in the second season does at least implicitly confirm other key details. For one, Ace is formally introduced during the Alabasta arc, teasing that the arc will at least begin in the second season, if not be fully adapted. Likewise, Ace is an important character for future events that the live-action adaptation may eventually get to, teasing that the series is at least setting itself up for the long-term well.

The second season will continue on Netflix’s live-action adaptation of author and illustrator Eiichiro Oda’s original manga series. Oda’s manga began serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in July 1997, and is still serialized there today, but progressing through its final saga.
